My 2021 Reading Challenges
Reading Challenges are so much fun. I love the feeling of completing one of these challenges or even surpassing it.
If you are looking for different reading challenges, you can check out The Master List of 2021 Reading Challenges over at GIRLXOXO. She has so many different ones. She has traditional bingo types, ones with prompts; you name it. Oh, and tones of genres.
If you want to sign up for one of the challenges below click the link after “Hosted by” and it will take you to the challenge page.
I have added a bunch to my list this year; let’s see what I signed up for.

My goal this year will be 104 books
Goodreads hosts an enormous reading challenge every year. I have been participating in this contest since 2011. I haven’t always hit my target, but I try. However, I did surpass my goal again in 2020, and the number of books I read is getting higher. Since I am a book blogger, it’s fantastic. I hope to read and review at least 2 books a week in 2021.
If you want to sign up, the reading challenge is open most of the year. The great thing about this reading challenge is that you can read any book that is on Goodreads. You may want to see if you can read more books in 2021. So head over to Goodreads and set your goal as soon as they have it up.

My goal this year is to read 26 books.
The Alphabet Soup Challenge means that by December 31, 2021, your bowls must be filled with one book for each letter of the Alphabet.
Each Letter Counts As 1 Spoonful
Details
This challenge will run from January 1st, 2021, until December 31st, 2021.
You can join anytime. You do not have to post a review of the book. Books can come from any genre. You do not need to link up each spoonful.
Make a page or a post or a GoodReads shelf where you will keep track of your spoonfuls. I keep track of mine on my Challenge Page.
Crossovers to other challenges are allowed and encouraged!
It’s an alphabet challenge!!! The challenge is to read one book that has a title starting with every letter of the alphabet.
You can drop the A’s, and The’s from the book titles as shown below.
The First Main Word Needs To Be The Letter You Are Counting
Except For that pesky Q, X, AND Z titles, then the word that starts with the challenge letter can be anywhere in the title.
So there are two different ways you can set up your own A-Z Reading Challenge.
A – How I plan to do it: Make a list on your blog from A-Z. Throughout the year, as you go along, add the books you are reading to the list. Towards the end of the year, you can check and see which letters you are missing and find books to fit.
OR
B – Make a list now of 26 books, picking one for each letter of the alphabet.
For example:
A – Artistic License to Kill by Paula Darnell
B – Beauty Expos Are Murder by Libby Klein
C – Complications: A Novel by Danielle Steel
D- Drenched in Light by Lisa Wingate
Books can be read in any order and all formats – print – e-book – audio – are acceptable for this challenge!
Ready to join??
If you post your books on Social Media, please use the hashtag #AlphabetSoupChallenge
Follow Escape With Dollycas Into A Good Book as there may be special announcements made about the challenge.
There is also a very active group on Facebook where you can share your books read, and converse with others taking part in the challenge. Alphabet Soup Challenge – You can share your accomplishments throughout the year there. Right now, they are finishing this year’s challenge, but it will switch over to the new year on January 1.
I am asking everyone to sign up using Google Forms. Sign Up Here.

My goal this year will be 10 books
The Backlist Reader Challenge (#BacklistReader) encourages us to read all those older books that have been piling up on our TBR piles or lists. And by “older,” I mean books that came out before 2020 (so, in 2019 or earlier.)
The challenge runs from January 1, 2021, through December 31, 2021. It ends at midnight in whatever timezone you’re in. You can still post reviews and link them up until January 5, 2022, but only for books read in 2021.
The Rules
Rule #1: To count for the challenge, books have to be published before 2020 AND already be on your TBR list or pile.
In other words, you don’t have to own the book. If it was on your want-to-read list when you signed up for the challenge, and it came out in 2019 or earlier, it counts… regardless of format (ebook, print book, audiobook) and regardless of how or where or when you acquired it. Library books totally count, as long as you had the book on your want-to-read list before you signed up for the challenge.
What does”TBR list” or “to-read” list” mean, exactly? It means whatever you use to keep track of the books you want to read. If that’s a shelf or a pile of physical books, great. If it’s the “to-read” shelf on Goodreads, also fine. If you keep a spreadsheet on your computer or a list in a notebook or a “for later” list in your library account, those work too just as long as you have something to keep track of what you want to read but haven’t read yet. (In my experience, most book-lovers have a to-read list of some sort, somewhere.)
Do rereads count? Personally, I love rereading familiar books, and in any given year, at least a third of my reading is rereads. But back when I first created this challenge, the goal was to encourage myself to read books I hadn’t ever gotten around to reading. On the other hand, there are some books on my TBR list that I read a long time ago but want to reread because I can barely remember them. So here’s the compromise I came up with: you can only count a book you have read before IF (a) you haven’t read the book in the last 10 years, and (b) you can’t remember much about it.
Rule #2: Create a goal or sign-up post on your blog
…or wherever you usually post your reviews or your thoughts about a book (e.g., Goodreads, LibraryThing, Instagram, Facebook.) Please link back to this post! Then link your sign-up post below, where you see the “Add your link” button. (Please link your actual goals/sign-up post, not your home page.) You can set your own goal, and you can list the books you want to read this year or leave it up to your mood at the time—as long as they are already on your TBR list when you sign up! You can sign up through December 1, 2021; after that, the sign-up link will be closed.
Rule #3 (optional): Review the books you read for the challenge, and post your links on the review linky
After Jan. 1, 2021, I’ll post a page with the review linky widget and link it here; you’ll also be able to get to it from the top menu bar. You can certainly do the challenge without writing reviews, but the review links are your entries for the year-end giveaway. Reviews don’t have to be long; a few sentences is fine. If you don’t have a blog, you can post them on Goodreads or LibraryThing or even on your Facebook or Instagram. Please link to your review itself (not to your blog’s main page, your profile, or the book’s main Goodreads or LibraryThing page.) If you’re unsure how to find that link, email me, and I’ll walk you through it.
Rule #4: Before January 5, 2022, create and link a wrap-up post
Let us know how you did! I’ll create a link-up post like this one for the wrap-up posts, so you can share your achievement with others who are participating!

Cozy mysteries, also referred to simply as “cozies,” are a sub-genre of crime fiction mysteries in which sex and violence are downplayed or treated humorously, and the crime and detection take place in a small, socially intimate community. The crime-solver is an amateur sleuth, usually but not always a woman, who is thrust into the aftermath of the murder. The protagonist frequently has an occupation or hobby that brings appealing information to the reader.
The challenge runs from January 1, 2021, and ends December 31, 2021.

This year’s cozy mystery reading challenge has two ways to participate, and you can choose whichever suits you the best:
A) Read only cozy mysteries of your choice.
Or
B) Read one book from these sub-genres:
– One from culinary (anything dealing with food: restaurants, baked goods, etc.)
– One from animal-related (cats, dogs, birds, etc.)
– One from craft-related (any kind of hobbies – knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, etc.)
– One from paranormal (witches, vampires, etc.)
– One from cozy mysteries based outside the US (example: Belinda Lawrence series (British))
– One career-based cozy mystery (housekeeping, wedding planner, etc.)
– One holiday based (set during any holiday – Christmas, Thanksgiving, Valentines, etc.)
– One travel mystery (character could be on a cruise, touring another area, etc.)
– One historical mystery (any mystery not set in the present)
– One is your choice! (freebie!)
Here are the levels you can join for either A or B…
Level one (Snoop) –
A) Read 10 cozy mysteries of your choice.
B) Read one book in each of the above cozy sub-genres (total of 10 books)
Level two (Investigator) –
A) Read 20 cozy mysteries of your choice.
B) Read all the books in level one plus an additional 10 cozy books of your choice (total of 20)
Level three (Super Sleuth) –
A) Read 30 cozy mysteries of your choice.
B) Read two books from each sub-genre in level one plus an additional 10 cozy books of your choice (total of 30 books)
Level four (Sleuth Extraordinaire) –

B)Read two books from each sub-genre in level one plus an additional 20 cozy books of your choice (total of 40 books)
Here are the rules…
1. The challenge runs from January 1, 2021, and ends December 31, 2021.
2. You don’t have to choose your books in advance. If you do, you can change your list at any time during the year. Books can overlap with other challenges.
3. Books can be in any format – paper, audio, ebooks…it all counts!
4. You don’t have to post a review, but I’m sure others would love to know about the books you are reading and may even want to add it to their reading lists.
NOTE: If you don’t have a blog and want to participate, that’s fine. You don’t have to have a blog. Just post in the comments section as you finish the books. If you belong to a site like Goodreads and review the books there, that’s fine too. Just leave us the link. I also have a group for this challenge on Goodreads, and you can sign up here.
5. If you do have a blog, take the button above, put it on your blog, and post about the challenge. Then add your name to Mr. Linky below. Please use the link of your challenge post, not the link to your home page.
6. I’m going to have one link for signing up, one link for completed reviews, and one link for your wrap up posts. I won’t be having a monthly link, just one for all reviews read for this challenge.

My goal this year will be to complete at least 60 toe tags (books).
Goal:
- You are the Medical Examiner, and your goal is to issue as many Toe Tags as you can during 2021 by reading murder mysteries and documenting the cause of death of the unfortunate victim(s).
How to:
- You can sign up on this page.
- Read a murder mystery. Note the victim(s) and cause(s) of death.
- Submit one Death Certificate per book, identifying the Cause(s) of Death of the victim(s). Any death (accidental, natural causes, homicide, suicide) counts, as long as the person is significant enough to be named in the book.
- This page does not update in real-time. Your submission generates an email to the Chief Medical Examiner, who will review the data and submit it to the Bureau of Vital Statistics, as summarized above.
Rules:
- This challenge is open from Jan 1, 2021 – Dec 24, 2021.
- Genres: You get to decide what is a ‘mystery.’ Traditional murder mysteries, thrillers, police procedurals, romances, all are welcome.
- Formats: Print books, audiobooks, radio dramatizations, or e-books may be used.
- You get one Toe Tag per victim. What counts? If the person is significant enough to be given a name and includes a cause of death, you can cite, then it counts. For more details on what counts and what doesn’t, see the FAQ page.
- Reviews: You do not need to write reviews, but you are welcome to. If you supply a link to your blog or Goodreads review, I will link to it.
- Bloggers are welcome to copy the toe tag image from the header (or any image that catches your fancy) for your blog.

My goal this year is to be a New Release Veteran with 80 books.
The rules for the 2021 New Release Challenge are simple:
Books have to be released and reviewed in 2021.
Other challenges can be used, as well. If you are participating in the Netgalley / Edelweiss challenge or the COYER challenge, books can count towards more than one challenge, as long as the ones you use for the 2021 New Release Reading Challenge qualify for the other rules.
The minimum length for a book to qualify is 100 pages, it can be in any format, though, physical, e-book, ARC, or audiobook.
The New Release Challenge is open from January 1st through December 31st, 2021, and sign-ups are open until September 1st, 2021.
You don’t have to be a blogger to participate; you can link to your review on Goodreads or Booklikes instead – so don’t be shy!
If you want to spread the love, please use #2021NewReleaseChallenge on Twitter
There are five levels in the 2021 New Release Challenge:
1-30 books per year – New Release Newbie
31-60 books per year – New Release Pro
61-100 books per year – New Release Veteran
101-200 books per year – New Release Enthusiast
200+ books per year – New Release Obsessed
To sign up, please link your sign-up post in the linky below, and also make sure you use the quarterly linky for your reviews. You can choose if you want to do monthly or quarterly challenge updates on your blog, but you will have the possibility to link up each quarter with your reviews.

Goal:
Shoot (read) six mysteries by the same target (author). You get one notch on your gun (and a prize) for each target completed.
How to:
- You can sign up on this page.
- Shoot (read) book #1
- Submit the form.
- Reload, repeat until you have read 6 books. Once you complete 6, you get a notch on your gun.
- Please note the Shooting Gallery does not update in real-time. Your submission generates an email to The Grand Targetmeister, who will fill in the data.
- This is a rolling challenge. How does that work? At the end of the year (Dec 31, 2021):
- A new page is set up for 2022, and the 2021 challenge is archived for your future reference.
- Completed targets are removed.
- Partially completed targets roll over to 2022, provided there was some activity on that target during 2021. Otherwise, they will be considered abandoned and removed.
Rules:
- The challenge runs from January 1 – December 24, 2021.
- Genres: You get to decide what is a ‘mystery’. Traditional murder mysteries, thrillers, police procedurals, young adult, romances, all are welcome.
- Formats: Print books, audiobooks, radio dramatizations, or e-books may be used.
- Each completed target earns you a notch on your gun.
- Once you have completed a target, you can target the same author again for additional notches.
- You can target different authors simultaneously or consecutively.
- Young folks are especially welcome too. Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew readers are naturals!
- Pseudonyms count as the same author, for example, if your target is Erle Stanley Gardner, you can count books by A. A. Fair.
- You do not need to write reviews, but you are welcome to. If you supply a link to your blog or Goodreads review, the title will link to it.
- Bloggers are welcome to copy any images from this challenge.
- Never enter the secret passageway first.
Thank you for stopping by to see which 2021 Reading Challenges I will be participating in.
What did you think? I have over 10 challenges. Drop back by here to check out my progress, or you can go to Reading Challenges on the above menu, which will bring you back here. It’s looking like there will be lots of mysteries are in my future. I am looking forward to filling out the toe tags. Yep, I just said that; hopefully, it’s not too morbid.
Are you doing any Reading Challenges in 2021? Drop a comment and let me know.
