When the beasts first appeared, the world we knew ended. One hundred-fifty years later mankind has found refuge within the walled villages they built. Now, life continues just as it always had before the beasts came. For Jarvis Graye that means his days are filled with all the normal things of a 13-year old boy: school, insecurities, friends, dreaded homework, and his new internship as courier.

However, when someone begins killing animals inside the village, the tranquil life of Kilhaven is upended. As the attacks spread to humans, Jarvis suspects his neighbor, founder of the strange group called The Society of the Watchers, is behind them. With Jarvis’s life and the safety of the village on the line, he, his best friend, Aron, and the new girl Nan, race to solve the mystery before someone ends up dead.

The Society of the Watchers by Scott Keen is a fantastically written mystery that’s geared toward middle graders.

Will Jarvis Graye figure out what is going on in his village?

Jarvis Graye

Jarvis Graye is just an average thirteen-year-old boy that is starting his apprenticeship working at the same place as his father. He doesn’t like his position as a courier and finds it lackluster than being an apprentice of some of the people protecting the village. Jarvis is an interesting kid and one that I would not have associated with as a middle grader. However, if I lived in Jarvis’s world, I probably would be as curious as he is. He is a great main character of the Kilhaven series, and I can’t wait to see more.

The MysteryThe Society of the Watchers CR

The mystery is all about why anyone would want to kill off their food supply, especially in the winter months. Jarvis is curious about it because it happened when he was near the preserve area. Now, Jarvis thinks that he could have died that night. He wants to help out his community even though no one would really believe a thirteen-year-old. Jarvis enlists his friends to help him figure it out so that things can go back to normal.

Four Stars

The Society of the Watchers by Scott Keen is a great book that gives the readers an idea of what could happen in the world’s future. Mr. Keen has a way with his words that made me think that I was there with him. I am giving this book four stars and recommending it to anyone that loves to read middle grade or wants to read it with their kids.
