Who are these moon maidens?

Summer of ’94 and Connor Whelan is excited to spend the last three months before his senior year with his uncle in Texas. Aware this trip is due to his mom’s cancer treatments, he still hopes this will be a season of magic.

He gets his wish when he encounters three magical women one night. Claiming to be from the moon itself, bewitching Iluna, flighty Eiru, and motherly Cassiopeia are about to make Connor’s last summer of childhood one to remember.

However, his interest in local girl Laura puts him in hot water with her tough boyfriend. His fascination with Iluna also confuses him. Will the moon maidens’ lessons about joy, wonder, and hope get him through this crazy summer?

My Magic Summer With the Moon Maidens by Brian Carmody is a tribute to a time that seemed a lot simpler than the way the world is now.

Does Connor end up with his Magical Summer?

In short, yes. Connor Whelan ends up having a magical summer before his senior year in Still Bayou, Texas, with his bachelor uncle. The summer of 1994 brings Connor from Virginia to Texas to not have to witness his mom’s cancer treatments. He ends up getting a job at Blockbuster, eating a ton of free Little Ceasers pizza courtesy of his friend Billy, playing on Billy’s Super Nintendo, and making new friends. The moon maidens come into his life like they were meant to spend the summer with him. Will Connor, though be able to be with either Laura or Ilura? The only way to know about that answer is to read the book.

My Magic Summer With the Moon Maidens CRA lot is going on in this book, and I don’t like to spoil anything. This book may make sense, but it was a bit weird to me. I thought I would like it from the plot summary, but it was a lot different than I thought it would be. So much was going on throughout Connor’s three-month stay in Texas, and even more so with the addition of the moon maidens made me question Connor. Connor is our narrator, and I feel like this book was him telling a tall tale.

Two Stars

My rating for My Magic Summer With the Moon Maidens by Brian Carmody is two stars and only a recommendation for people who feel like this book works for them. Mr. Carmody did a good job spinning a tremendous tall tale story, but it wasn’t meant for me. I hope for Mr. Carmody’s success with this book and that maybe some others will find it better suited for them.
