A new dawn

Wounded veteran Ryder Shelton wants to retreat from the world, and can think of nowhere better than his hometown of Rankins, Alaska. It's cold, clean and best of all—isolated.Though Rankins is small and remote, the people who live there are warm and caring, and butt their way into Ryder's life, especially one pretty and determined neighbor Jessie Madigan. Jessie and her special dog Fife start to mean a lot to Ryder. But is he ready to return to normal life? Is Ryder ready for romance?

Will Ryder forgive himself and embrace life?

Autumn at Jasper Lake by Carol Ross is a fantastic short story. This novella is part of Seasons of Alaska series by Ms. Ross.

This novella centers around Ryder Shelton. He is a veteran, who is blaming himself for something that has happened in his past. The heroine is Jessie Madigan who is trying to help him and help Fife.

Ryder Shelton

What I like about Ryder is that he loves dogs, and is very helpful. His love of dogs comes from his upbringing, and he so does his need to help people. What I don’t like about Ryder is that he takes the blame for a lot of stuff, and he doesn’t think that he deserves to be happy because of what happened in the past.

Jessie Madigan

What I like about Jessie is that just like the hero she loves dogs and is excellent at her job. That job is to take care of any animal that needs help. What I don’t like about Jessie is that she is continually pushing assistance on people even when that person wants to have their pity party.

About Carol Ross

Carol Ross

USA Today bestselling author Carol Ross grew up in small town America right between the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains, in a place where you can go deep sea fishing in the morning and then hit the ski slopes the same afternoon. The daughter of what is now known as free range parents, she developed a love of the outdoors at a very early age. As a writer, Carol loves to breathe the life she has lived into the characters she creates, grateful for the “research material” that every questionable decision, adrenaline-charged misstep, and near-death experience has provided.
