Would you trust your developing years to a mysterious organization expecting a successful life in return? In the midst of the 2040s, Livvy Blunt, a girl with an unquiet mind, lives in confinement. Her home is a monastery, a place of silence and meditation created to keep her mind free from the frivolous matters of the modern world.
The Monastery is a corporation with a clear goal: transform young Empty-heads into skilled Silver-hairs. The means to do that are controversial: uploads of skills to the brain. The more youngsters manage to keep their minds empty of gossip and avoid overthinking life, the more skills can be transferred.
Livvy has a hard time trying to keep her mind idle, but her sacrifice should pay off by the promise of a successful future as a Silver-hair, a professional any recruiter would fight to hire. But when time comes for her to choose her set of skills, she is denied every professional and fun skill she ever longed for.
People say she’s lucky for being selected to the Monasterial Upload Program, but she's not so sure.

U-Day by Rapha Ram is a fast-paced adventure, part science fiction, part love letter to Barcelona. Seriously, a trip to Spain is now on this reader’s bucket list!

Will Livvy find what her heart desire’s or will she be destined to fulfill others’ dreams?

LIVVY

Livvy Blunt is a student at the mysterious Monastery who is nearing her U-day or upload day. Students at the Monastery are taught to keep their minds blank and empty through zen-like practices. On their U-day, the training for their chosen profession is instantly uploaded, and graduates are offered special employment opportunities and preferential treatment out in the real world. At first, it sounds like the easy way out, but in fact, Livvy’s training is grueling and shadowy characters are all around her.

Memory Full U-Day isn’t necessarily a “coming of age” story, but we certainly meet Livvy at a very important stage in her life. She’s about to become one of the rare Monastery graduates, she’s got a secret crush, she yearns to learn more about her Mother, but mostly, she doesn’t really know what she wants to be when she grows up. When she’s given a chance to peek beyond the Monastery, her understanding of the world is dramatically challenged.

THE UNKNOWN

U-Day CRAs soon as Livvy is beyond the Monastery’s high walls, she begins to question the upload process. The moral, physical, and political ramifications of uploading are questioned, and I really appreciated how Ram also looks at its effect on the world of art. One of my favorite aspects about Memory Full U-Day is that we learn so much right alongside Livvy.

Ram’s use of super short chapters makes for a breakneck pace and an irresistible urge to turn the page. The book’s first pages set up a big mystery and certain distrust, but Ram doesn’t ever entirely give you straight answers. Memory Full U-Day is already set up as book one, and I look forward to seeing where the next installment brings Livvy.

FIVE STARS

I really enjoyed Rapha Ram’s Memory Full U-Day, and I give it five stars. If you’re seeking a fast-paced, pre-dystopian novel, then you’ll certainly enjoy it too!
