Ever since his punitive transfer to Lungariva, the sleepy village has quickly become the Cabot Cove of the Italian Riviera.

This time, Deputy Assistant Chief of Police Luigi Berté has to investigate a double murder in the Grand Hotel Miramare, Lungariva’s historic luxury hotel, playground for old nobility, international business tycoons, and polo players. But one of the guests is not what they seem and Berté has to work quickly before his suspects scatter to the four corners of the earth – with deadly results.

Set in the very real Grand Hotel Miramare in the village of Santa Margherita Ligure, this novel features Luigi Berté, one of the best-known characters in modern Italian fiction. Appearing in a dozen murder mysteries and counting, Berté, a truly unique Italian creation, is beloved for his quirky approach to solving crimes, his kibitzing conscience, and his love for good food. Double Murder at the Grand Hotel Miramare is the first of Berté’s adventures to be translated into English.

Double Murder at the Grand Hotel Miramare by Elena and Michela Martignoni is fantastically witty, with a beautiful setting and a magnificent mystery.

Will Luigi find out who committed the double murder?

Luigi Berte

Our investigator is Deputy Assistant Chief of Police Luigi Berte. Berte is eccentric, capable, and extremely good at his job. However, he has a quick temper, is known to go into fits of obscenities, and has an unusual relationship with his subconscious. Luigi also sports a ponytail, which isn’t typical for police officers, much less Deputy Assistant Chiefs. Berte also loves food and coffee.

I was immediately on Berte’s side. Even though some of the things he does aren’t honorable, he is good at putting the puzzle pieces of the mystery together. He has his own way of investigating that makes sense. I truly enjoyed seeing everything from his point of view. I might have gained a couple of pounds just reading about all the scrumptious food he was eating.

Double Murder at the Grand Hotel Miramare CRThe Mystery

The double murder is shocking. However, the scandal is equally as disturbing to some as the murders are to others. You know the secrets will be plentiful whenever you mix in an aristocrat. Berte keeps the story moving at a fast pace. I like how the authors described everything, and I felt like I was there in Italy with Berte, solving the mystery.

I honestly was stunned by whodunit. There was no way I picked up on the clues for this culprit. Once the murder was unveiled, I could see the numerous clues that the authors left for us in my head. I think I was so wrapped up in Luigi’s personal life and the sights that he was discovering that I lost track of the murder. The mystery reminds me of a noir mystery, just modernized.

Five Stars

I was completely entertained and sucked into the case. Luigi is a fascinating, well seasoned, competent investigator. I hope that in the next installment, he figures out his personal life. My rating for Double Murder at the Grand Hotel Miramare by Elena and Michela Martignoni is five stars. I recommend this one to all you serious mystery lovers out there. The Martignoni sisters write an incredible mystery.
