An unconventional woman and a man shrouded in mystery walk a tightrope of desire as they race against a killer to find a machine that could change the world.

Former trapeze artist Amalie Vaughn moved to Burning Cove to reinvent herself, but things are not going well. After spending her entire inheritance on a mansion with the intention of turning it into a bed-and-breakfast, she learns too late that the villa is said to be cursed. When the first guest, Dr. Norman Pickwell, is murdered by his robot invention during a sold-out demonstration, rumors circulate that the curse is real.

In the chaotic aftermath of the spectacle, Amalie watches as a stranger from the audience disappears behind the curtain. When Matthias Jones reappears, he is slipping a gun into a concealed holster. It looks like the gossip that is swirling around him is true—Matthias evidently does have connections to the criminal underworld.

Matthias is on the trail of a groundbreaking prototype cipher machine. He suspects that Pickwell stole the device and planned to sell it. But now Pickwell is dead and the machine has vanished. When Matthias’s investigation leads him to Amalie’s front door, the attraction between them is intense, but she knows it is also dangerous. Amalie and Matthias must decide if they can trust each other and the passion that binds them because time is running out.

Tightrope by Amanda Quick is fabulously written mystery, with just the right amount of suspense, thrillers, and a touch of smoking romance.

Will Amalie and Matthias find Mr. Smith before he finds them and gets the cipher machine?

Amalie Vaughn

Amalie is a fantastic character. She is strong, confident, and beautiful. Amalie comes from a line of circus trapeze artists, and even now that she is retired, she carries herself with poise and grace. I love her view of humanity. Amalie is not a force to be reckoned with. She doesn’t need saving; she is taking care of herself. Although it doesn’t mean that she wants to spend all of her time alone, she just needs to find that right person to compliment her.

Matthias Jones

Matthias works with Luther Pell, owner of the night club in Burning Cove. He has ties to the mob, and his reputation is anything but sterling. Matthias is an engineer, but he also has a gift, and with that, he assists Luther with duties that aren’t known to all. I like Matthias and the way that he handles his gift. He is caring, supportive, and not smothering with Amalie. They work together beautifully.

Tightrope CRThe Mystery

We have a few mysteries that are working together in this installment. We have the partner of the man who tried to kill Amalie; there is the person that killed the robot inventor, the person trying to buy the cipher machine, and the elusive Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith also has another item that leads into the next book, Close Up.

I figured out part of it but was blown away by the actual identity of Mr. Smith and how close he was to our characters. Yet, as I think back on the events, I can see the clues.

Five Stars

Tightrope by Amanda Quick is a superb addition to the Burning Cove family. Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz does such a marvelous job with this series. She adds just the right amount of detail to put the picture perfectly into your mind. I adore this series. Therefore, Tightrope by Amanda Quick is five stars. I thoroughly recommend this book to all mystery lovers.

Oh, and the cover is gorgeous.
