Virginia Dean wakes at midnight beside a dead body, with a bloody knife in her hand and no memory of the evening's events. Dark energy, emanating from the mirrors lining the room, overpowers her senses. With no apparent way in or out, she is rescued by a man she has met only once before, but won't soon forget.

Owen Sweetwater inherited his family's talent for hunting the psychical monsters who prey on London's women and children, and his investigation into the deaths of two glass-readers has led him here. The high-society types of the exclusive Arcane Society would consider Virginia an illusionist, a charlatan, even a criminal, but Owen knows better. Virginia's powers are real-and they just might be the key to solving this challenging case.

Quicksilver by Amanda Quick is a mesmerizing, fast-paced mystery with paranormal, family, friendship, and love. I adore it!

Will Owen and Virginia find the murderer before he finds Virginia?

This story takes place in Victorian England, where a person is murdering people with glasslight talents. Jones and Jones are hired by the Arcane Society to protect those with paranormal abilities and to help the police take those abusing their powers out of the picture. The Jones hires Owen Sweetwater to handle the investigation as he is better suited to this type of case.

Owen discovers what is happening and narrows in on who the next victim will be. He steps in to protect her, finding himself enthralled with Virginia Dean, a powerful glasslight practitioner. Although Virginia will not allow Owen to push her into safety, she will assist him in the investigation along with friends and family.

I love the way that Ms. Quick brings a story together. My attention is entirely on the story, and the real world disappears. It is hypnotizing. I feel like I am right there with the characters looking for the killer, feeling the thrill of the chase.

Owen and Virginia

Owen Sweetwater is a dangerous, honorable, stubborn, powerful man who must right the wrongs of paranormal criminals. The men of the Sweetwater family have some profound secrets, and they must find a woman that can handle their secrets, strength, and attitudes. I think the character of Owen is amazing. He knows he needs to find someone, yet he doesn’t want his family butting into his affairs of heart. He is ultimately the dark and a bit brooding type, but there is a light in his heart that, so far, most don’t see.

Virginia Dean is a woman of spinster age and maintains her own way of life. Right down to her work as a glasslight practitioner, reading mirrors for clients searching for answers. Her talent mostly brings death to her sight, and at times, the ends are violent. However, Virginia has been on her own since she was thirteen when her parents died in an accident. She is stubborn, tenacious, talented and powerful. I really like her. Virginia doesn’t waste her time on things that aren’t important to her. I found that she is a wonderful heroine who looks out for her own.Quicksilver CR

Other Cast Members

Nick Sweetwater is a scholarly, absent-minded gentleman who truly needs someone to look after him. I love that he can’t seem to tie his tie properly. Yet, if you are looking for something that needs to be researched, a code cracked, or a letter in another language translated, ask him, and he will handle it.

Charlotte Tate is Virginia’s best friend. She owns a bookstore specializing in the paranormal. Apparently, the paranormal was a big topic in the Victorian era. Charlotte is slightly older than Virginia and, therefore, considered a spinster. However, she hasn’t yet met a man who has piqued her interest. The discussions about Dr. Spinner are entertaining. I like that she is a loyal friend to Virgina and that she is not willing to risk her independence for any man.

Matthew and Tony Sweetwater are Owen’s younger nephews. Matt is funny. He offers advice to his uncle with regards to Virginia. Information that he has obtained from novels about relationships. Matt and Tony are still in training to join the Sweetwater family business. I like that they add the humor and hijinks to the story to lighten it up a bit.

Mrs. Crofton, Virginia’s housekeeper. She is at the stage in her life where she must take what life deals her, or so she thought. Mrs. Crofton is believed to be stepping down in staff society by working with Virginia. However, she becomes aware that she is part of this family, not just someone serving them. Mrs. Crofton and Virginia become a team. I like her and enjoyed her character growth throughout the story.

Five Stars

My rating for Quicksilver by Amanda Quick is five stars. I have got to put the rest of this series on my TBR for next year. So, yes, I highly recommend them.

I can’t say how perfectly Ms. Quick incorporates the paranormal, historical times, and strong characters into such a brilliantly thrilling, mystery-filled story.
