The dead should stay dead...unless they were alive to begin with.

Life for Pepper Dunn is just beginning to slow down in the magical town of Magnolia Cove, Alabama, when her Uncle Donovan, who is supposed to be deceased, appears on her doorstep very much alive. Turns out Uncle Donovan faked his death to avoid the werewolf mafia, a dangerous group who will stop at nothing to get their hands on him.

But when a hit on Donovan goes wrong and someone else winds up murdered, it’s up to Pepper and her boyfriend Axel to find the killer before another life is taken. Can she do it? Or will Pepper be next in line to face off against a killer?

Find out now!

Princess with a pet vampire bat? No trouble could come from that situation. Right?

Southern Curses by Amy Boyles is a super cute cozy mystery. Family ties are one of the best things about this series. I think that Ms. Boyles has a great sense of humor and she makes the setting of hidden magical towns so believable.

Fun things I liked:

  • The vampire cursed to be a vampire bat for the rest of his life storyline is ingenious.
  • Relationships and growth of the regular characters.
  • New characters like Eva. She has such a great backstory and a huge heart.
  • Princess is funny, loves makeup and bonding. It’s hard to believe that she is a werewolf.
  • Pepper is stepping up into her powers and embracing her life in Magnolia Cove.
  • Cajun Shrimp nail polish.
  • Witchy-flavored ice cream.

Brewed Eye of Newt and was chocolate with a caramel ribbon and chunks of cookie dough scattered throughout.

Different things:

  • Cobalt Magic
  • Donovan and Betty’s secrets (siblings keep secrets)
  • Sensational Singers – like the von Trapp family of singers

Donovan:

Donovan is Pepper’s uncle he is different than what I accepted. But then what do expect from the guy who faked his death. He seems like a terrific guy. Although, he like margaritas. Really who doesn’t?

Donovan slid his hands down his thighs. “Apparently I went out for Mexican food in the wrong town, had too many margaritas and started talking about how I’d outsmarted the mob by faking my own death.”

Boyles, Amy. Southern Curses (Sweet Tea Witch Mysteries Book 5) (Kindle Locations 237-239). LADYBUGBOOKS LLC. Kindle Edition.

Donovan helps Pepper with her magic, but he also thought she might be a creature witch and not a head witch. Seriously, people, someone should ask Rufus, as he seems to know what type of witch Pepper is already.

5 Stars for Southern Curses by Amy Boyles

Southern Curses by Amy Boyles was a fantastic read; my rating is five stars. Magnolia Cove is a terrific place to spend time. I like the characters, the predicaments they get themselves into and the way that they save the day.

The next book is called Southern Karma, but it isn’t available until September. However, if you haven’t read this Sweet Tea Witches Series of cozy paranormal mysteries, then you should check them out.

About Amy Boyles

Amy Boyles

Amy Boyles grew up reading Judy Blume and Christopher Pike. Somehow, the combination of coming of age books and teenage murder mysteries made her want to be a writer. After graduating college at DePauw University, she spent some time living in Chicago, Louisville, and New York before settling back in the South. Now, she spends her time chasing two toddlers while trying to stir up trouble in Silver Springs, Alabama, the fictional town where Dylan Apel and her sisters are trying to master witchcraft, tame their crazy relatives, and juggle their love lives.
