Even the best laid plans of egg-laying chickens can go awry...

All Pepper Dunn wants is a quiet life in the witchy town of Magnolia Cove, Alabama. But when the Cotton and Cobwebs Festival arrives, her dream goes up in smoke. This year, grandmother Betty is determined to win the award for best magical creature against Melbalean Mayes, the contest matron. To win, Betty needs Pepper’s help.

But when Melbalean winds up dead and Betty is accused of the murder, Pepper is thrust into one role she never expected—she must complete a list of chores that keeps her town running.

Pepper has her hands full—she must ensure the safety of her town, try to clear Betty’s name, and make sure no one else winds up a victim of the Magnolia Cove murderer. Can she do it? Or will she become the next victim?

Has the festival come to town and brought a killer with it?

Southern Spells by Amy Boyles is a fun mystery with some family drama thrown in. The more we get to know Pepper and her family the more I like them. They have that southern charm.

In this installment, Pepper learns more about the town secrets, and she gets to see more parts of the town. Pepper seems to be getting the hand of the familiar shop, but she still needs to learn about her other magic. A few cool places to look for are The Conjuring Caverns and Lightning Bug Creek.

We meet to more of the townspeople, like the mayor, Peter Potion and Melbalean Mayes, who is Betty’s nemesis. We also learn more about Betty and everything she does to make the townspeople happy and safe.

The Cotton & Cobwebs festival has come to Magnolia Cove early this year which brings people from other magical towns to sell their wares and compete in the contests. Betty is, of course, competing with Melbalean in the magical animal contest. Well, until Melbalean is murdered and Betty is the number one suspect. Although with so many out-of-towners we have more suspects than usual.

Oh did I mention that Melbalean is Rufus’s mother? You know the 80’s Rocker dude who wants Pepper. Anyway, makes you wonder if the wrong side of Rufus came from Melbalean or his father.

These are the thing that I liked about the story:

  • Betty of course as she is my favorite character. She loves her granddaughters and helps them out, but she needs to trust them to figure out their own love lives.
  • Pepper and Axel are getting closer, and Axel is sharing his secret with Pepper.
  • Amelia learned that for a relationship to work both parties must be truthful.
  • Rufus is afraid of werewolves. However, he is slyer than the town gave him credit.

Some questions that still come up:

  • Hopefully, in the next book, we will find the answers.
  • What happened to the rest of Melbalean’s eggs?
  • Is Cordelia secretly dating the new sheriff?
  • What does Rufus want with Pepper’s magic? And how did he know she was a head witch before anyone else?
  • When will Pepper learn to use her magic?

The Aunts

Mint and Licky, with their mischief witchcraft and the chaos they cause, is fun. They can get into trouble, but they seem to be good at heart. Their magic is just out of control sometimes.

5 Stars for Southern Spells by Amy Boyles

My rating for Southern Spells by Amy Boyles is five stars. The story and the characters continue to surprise me. It would be fun to visit Magnolia Cove’s Cotton and Cobwebs festival. I am currently reading the 3rd book in the series, Southern Myths. So, check out the Sweet Tea Witch Mysteries. They are available on Kindle Unlimited if you are a member of that.

About Amy Boyles

Amy Boyles

Amy Boyles grew up reading Judy Blume and Christopher Pike. Somehow, the combination of coming of age books and teenage murder mysteries made her want to be a writer. After graduating college at DePauw University, she spent some time living in Chicago, Louisville, and New York before settling back in the South. Now, she spends her time chasing two toddlers while trying to stir up trouble in Silver Springs, Alabama, the fictional town where Dylan Apel and her sisters are trying to master witchcraft, tame their crazy relatives, and juggle their love lives.
