If only takes a second for life to go to heck-in-a-hand-basket!
In less than twenty-four hours Pepper Dunn loses her job, her boyfriend, and her home.
It's the worst day of her life.
But when Pepper discovers she’s a witch and has inherited the most important store in the magical town of Magnolia Cove, Alabama, she’s as happy as a pig in mud.
Too bad the shop is a familiar pet store and Pepper doesn’t like animals—not even a teensy bit. Determined to sell the shop and get the heck out of town, Pepper’s plans go haywire when a local storeowner winds up dead and Pepper gets accused of murder.
Thrust into a magical mystery, Pepper teams up with a mysterious private detective and a cat so traumatized by the murder that she’s not talking—and that cat could hold the key to Pepper’s innocence.
Now Pepper must avoid trouble, solve the mystery, and placate her new grandmother, who keeps a strict ten p.m. curfew that’s enforced by the talking end of her shotgun.
Sounds like a simple day in the life—as if. Can Pepper solve the murder or will she become the next victim of the Magnolia Cove murderer? And most importantly, will Pepper learn to love the animals she’s in charge of?
Find out now!

Wow, when Pepper’s life changes we are talking a complete rewrite.

Southern Magic by Amy Boyles is funny, lighthearted and mysterious. Pepper and her family of food named relatives are hilarious. I am so glad that Goodreads recommended this book/series to me.

The setting is in Magnolia Cove, Alabama. Southern mysteries are one of my favorites.

Pepper Dunn, our sleuth

Pepper’s life is kind of blah after the death of her father. However, she is getting by, and she manages to keep a positive outlook. Then everything falls apart in a blink of an eye. Pepper doesn’t have a lot of choices so following the direction of a cat she heads to Magnolia Cove.

This is where we get to see how Pepper handles life. I think she does a remarkable job at not going postal. Her Mom’s family is a little acentric, ok maybe they are incredibly acentric. But hey, who doesn’t have at least one crazy aunt or uncle. So, Pepper’s family is different; they don’t seem that different in Magnolia Cove.

Pepper pretty much does what she has to do and seems to be quickly learning how to use her newfound magic and take care of a shop full of familiars. She is even getting used to animals.

The mystery

Pepper was found standing over the murdered pawn shop owner while holding the murder weapon. What is our young sleuth to do, well find the murder of course?

What Pepper finds is that lots of things in Magnolia Cove aren’t what they seem. Can she clear her name before they lock her up in the witches’ prison?

My favorite character

Betty Craple is my favorite character. I love the crazy old grandma type of characters. Betty is a powerful witch, but she is a crack up. She has a guard vine at her front door, she dresses in the 70s and 80s fashion, has curly gray hair (I picture the short curls all over like my own Gram wore), and wears tennis shoes.

Betty has rules and you had best follow them, like the 10 pm curfew. She makes wonderful meals and has a different sense of humor. Yes, and she makes wonderful sweet tea which should be a must for all grandmas, southern or not.

About Amy Boyles

Amy Boyles

Amy Boyles grew up reading Judy Blume and Christopher Pike. Somehow, the combination of coming of age books and teenage murder mysteries made her want to be a writer. After graduating college at DePauw University, she spent some time living in Chicago, Louisville, and New York before settling back in the South. Now, she spends her time chasing two toddlers while trying to stir up trouble in Silver Springs, Alabama, the fictional town where Dylan Apel and her sisters are trying to master witchcraft, tame their crazy relatives, and juggle their love lives.
