It’s Pepper Dunn’s first Thanksgiving in the magical town of Magnolia Cove, Alabama. The entire town is ready to celebrate—except Pepper, who’s still yearning for her boyfriend, Axel Reign, to return.

But she has little time to mourn. When a new baker sets up shop across the street from Pepper’s cousin and starts stealing customers, it’s all out war. But when the storeowner ends up murdered and Pepper’s cousin becomes suspect number one, it’s up to Pepper to help.

Thrust into a mystery, she teams up with a talking rabbit that’s keeping more information than he’s revealing and an old foe turned friend. More secrets than Pepper bargained for unravel in front of her, but the main one—who killed the baker, is anyone’s guess.

Will Pepper solve the murder or will she become the next victim?

Thanksgiving in Magnolia Cove

Southern Magic Thanksgiving by Amy Boyles is a hysterical, entertaining Thanksgiving read. This story is a beautiful family Thanksgiving tale.

All the members of the Caple family are celebrating Thanksgiving as only Magnolia Cove does. Well, except for Carmen since she is in jail for murder. But before they can help Carmen Pepper has to save the town from a crazy giving potion. Pepper doesn’t have Axel to assist, and she isn’t quite herself.

Here are some of the things to look for:

  • A frozen turkey hunt
  • Pecan pies with chocolate bats on them
  • A talking rabbit
  • A partially eaten turkey running around the table
  • Licky and Mint help Pepper with the counter potion and spill about their husbands
  • Pepper learns some curious things about her cousins
  • There is a moonshine bar in town with flavored loaded moonshine
  • A crazy attorney running around confiscating items
  • Betty is sick
  • Cordelia is nice to Amelia

My thoughts

I love that this family is so not normal and yet they are a typical family. They take care of one another. They work as a team in this installment.

Pepper finds that she can be herself without Axel, but she really wants him back. I think Pepper is still growing and developing.

I hitched a shoulder. “Maybe she does. Maybe we’re not giving her enough credit.” “Maybe.” Doubt dripped from her voice. It was so thick I was surprised I didn’t see it land on the floor. Of course, I don’t know what it would’ve looked like. Little letters? Or more like a dry cracker? Okay, enough of the indulging thoughts.

About Amy Boyles

Amy Boyles

Amy Boyles grew up reading Judy Blume and Christopher Pike. Somehow, the combination of coming of age books and teenage murder mysteries made her want to be a writer. After graduating college at DePauw University, she spent some time living in Chicago, Louisville, and New York before settling back in the South. Now, she spends her time chasing two toddlers while trying to stir up trouble in Silver Springs, Alabama, the fictional town where Dylan Apel and her sisters are trying to master witchcraft, tame their crazy relatives, and juggle their love lives.
