Return to 1930s Burning Cove, California, the glamorous seaside playground for Hollywood stars, mobsters, spies, and a host of others who find more than they bargain for in this mysterious town.
Maggie Lodge, assistant to the reclusive advice columnist known only as Dear Aunt Cornelia to her readers, hires down-but-not-quite-out private eye Sam Sage to help track down the person who is blackmailing her employer. Maggie and Sam are a mismatched pair. As far as Sam is concerned, Maggie is reckless and in over her head. She is not what he had in mind for a client but he can't afford to be choosy. Maggie, on the other hand, is convinced that Sam is badly in need of guidance and good advice. She does not hesitate to give him both.
In spite of the verbal fireworks between them, they are fiercely attracted to each other, but each is convinced it would be a mistake to let passion take over. They are, after all, keeping secrets from each other. Sam is haunted by his past, which includes a marriage shattered by betrayal and violence. Maggie is troubled by intense and vivid dreams--dreams that she can sometimes control. There are those who want to run experiments on her and use her for their own purposes, while others think she should be committed to an asylum.
When the pair discovers someone is impersonating Aunt Cornelia at a conference on psychic dreaming and a woman dies at the conference, the door is opened to a dangerous web of blackmail and murder. Secrets from the past are revealed, leaving Maggie and Sam in the path of a ruthless killer who will stop at nothing to exact vengeance.
When She Dreams by Amanda Quick is gripping and had me spellbound from the first page.
Will Maggie and Sam figure out who the blackmailer and killer are before it is too late?
Maggie Long
Maggie is a writer, but to save her employer’s reputation, she enlists the assistance of a private investigator and becomes his partner in the chase of a blackmailer. She is also what is called a lucid dreamer. These dreams could be nightmares or normal happy dreams, but Maggie has the ability to know that it is a dream and to change the outcome. Well, most of the time, it’s a work in progress. Maggie is tenacious, intelligent, and not afraid of hard work. She is also not prone to hysterics.
Maggie is a fantastic character, and I like her a lot. She keeps Sam on his toes and notices things others don’t seem to. I would most definitely want her on my side.
Sam Sage
Sam is our private investigator. His past is brutal, but he seems to be doing much better in the present. Sam could be described as a by-the-book investigator who follows the facts, not instinct. Yet, he does have a bit of intuition, even if he doesn’t like to admit it. At first, he is a true skeptic, but by the end, you can tell he believes, even if that belief is mostly in Maggie.
The Mystery
Aunt Cornelia writes the advice column, and someone is blackmailing her. She is out of the country, and since she is Maggie’s employer, Maggie is on the case. Maggie gains Sam’s assistance. The two of them head to Burning Cove but find more than a blackmailer and dream conference. The first evening, one of the guests is murdered. Sam and Maggie are on the scene and now have to figure out if it is related to the blackmailing. Of course, it could all be tied to a death a few years earlier or not.
We also get a scene with Raina and Luther. Maggie tries to help Luther deal with some things that are troubling him. It is fabulous when the old characters show up in the newer storylines.
Five Stars
I absolutely love this series. Ms. Quick’s writing completely transports you to Burning Cove in the 1930s. I read this book in one evening and couldn’t put it down. In fact, it has still been on my mind. My rating for When She Dreams by Amanda Quick is five stars. If I could get Goodreads to give out more stars, I would.
I highly recommend this book and the rest of the series. Please check them out if you haven’t already.
