Summary:

Green witch Pax Thatcher leads a busy life. Between working two jobs, applying to grad school, and helping out at the old herb shop that belongs to her friend and mentor, Miss Millie, Pax doesn’t have much time for practicing spells. She’s lucky she can keep her enormous plant collection alive.

Fortunately, she can talk to her plants, and they talk back.

But when Pax arrives for a visit to her seaside hometown of Honesty Harbor, Maine, and discovers Miss Millie is missing, she drops everything to find her. When she does, it’s just in time to hear Miss Millie’s dying words:

Poison. Find them.

Unable to believe anyone would want to murder the kind old woman, Pax vows to fulfill Miss Millie’s last request. But how can a boring little witch who doesn’t even own a cauldron solve a murder? Ask the only witness—a potted plant—what happened.

But the more she listens to her leafy allies, the more questions she has. And when others begin to view her as the prime suspect, Pax must hurry to weed out the killer before someone else gets whacked.

An Interview with Pax Thatcher

How did you and your author meet?

Yikes, it was so long ago it’s hard to remember! I think I met her the day she named me. She decided “Pax” was a good character name, and she built me from there. It was fun, being born. A lot less screaming and fluids than you usually get when someone’s born. Ew. This was much better.

Why did this writer decide to feature you in a book?

You know, I don’t know. I guess she thought I had a good enough story to tell, and once she got to know me she knew she wouldn’t rest until she wrote it all down. She’s given me a pretty awesome life, though. I’m so grateful to exist! And the fact I can talk to plants? That is so rad.

Do you have any friends or family helping you out?

I have Samwise, my emergency backup little brother, a handful of cats, and a really, really hot bartender who seems to think I’m cute. I don’t even know what to do with that! She’s just so cool. She has a motorcycle, for Pete’s sake! Sam, stop laughing at me.

Do you have a regular job and investigate on the side or are you a full-time detective?

Once upon a time, I was a Target assistant manager and a substitute biology teacher for middle-grade kids. It was…not a great existence, if I’m perfectly honest. Neither job paid a living wage at all, so when Miss Millie died and I found myself with an inheritance…let’s just say [no spoilers] that my new career is a lot more interesting.

What is the funniest thing that happens to you or another character in this story?

Honestly, anything that happens to Sam is hilarious, for the most part. From his first appearance to every UNHELPFUL comment he makes about Angie, he’s a funny guy. As for me? I mean, I spend a lot of time talking to a reticent cactus, so…

Have you solved other cases or is this your first one?

This is my first one! As much as I’d like to not experience another murder, I’m hoping I get to solve at least one more mystery. I’ve got a real Agatha Christie vibe going on over here.

Do you have a gift or special talent?

Plants talk to me and I can talk back. You’d think it’d be super useful, but sometimes it can be a real drag. I know when someone cuts down a tree—did you know, they scream?—and I can sense when a flower is dying. Cut flowers are basically corpses. So, it’s not all fun and games, but my jasmine plants always know where I left my keys, and succulents have the best gossip.

Who is the most important individual in your life?

At this point? Probably Samwise and Angie. Angie doesn’t know how important she is—yet. Maybe if she stopped messing around with flirting and did something about it…?

What is your ideal vacation?

Oh, I’d love to go to New Zealand! Do you even know all the plants they have there???

If you could change anything about your life, what would it be?

I’d bring Miss Millie back. I miss her like a limb.
