Interview with Pat Pirard

How did you and your author meet?

We’ve been friends for many years. My author wrote a series, Regan McHenry Real Estate Mysteries, and felt confident having a realtor as her protagonist because she had been one for many years and could add authenticity to her books, but when she wanted to start a new series, she needed an expert in the field of private investigation and turned to me.

Why did this writer decide to feature you in a book?

I’m based on a real person who was the Santa Cruz County Law Librarian for many years and really is a private investigator. My author gets to consult with my real persona about the PI end of what I’m doing now that I’ve been downsized out of my law librarian gig and am trying to keep afloat by becoming a detective.

Do you have any friends or family helping you out?

My soon to be husband, if he survives Dearly Beloved Departed, is a sheriff sergeant. My best friend, Syda Gonzales is married to a deputy sheriff, and even my Dalmatian, Dot, and cat, Lord Peter Wimsey, get involved with me in cases.

Would you rather quit your regular job and investigate full time?

I used to have a real job, but I was let go on my thirty-fifth birthday after spending every bit of my savings on a used sunburst yellow Mercedes convertible. In a panic that my dog and cat might be couch surfing with me when my severance package was spent, I printed business cards declaring I was Private Investigator Pat and am now working full time―at least I hope so―as an unlicensed PI…which is legal as long as I work for an attorney or government entity.

What is the funniest thing that happens to you or another character in this story?

I can’t tell you that without giving away too much, but I can tell you the funniest thing that happened in The Corpse’s Secret Life, the book before Dearly Beloved Departed was me down on one knee proposing to Tim, not with a ring, but with a set of drill bits.

Have you solved other cases or is this your first one?

This is case number four for me. I think I have another one waiting for me, but I haven’t answered my business phone yet, which is how I discover what my next case will be.

Do you have a gift or special talent?

Well, I’m not a psychic or a witch or anything like that, but I am organized and good at seeing how clues relate to one another. I’m also a very good researcher, probably because of all my years researching the law to answer attorney questions when I was the law librarian.

Who is the most important individual in your life?

That has to be Tim. If he survives, we are getting married.

What is your ideal vacation?

My ideal vacation was going to be a Hawaiian honeymoon, but things didn’t work out for that to happen.

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?

I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve enjoyed my life. Oh, wait, I can think of one thing. I wouldn’t have wasted so much emotional energy with the boyfriend I had before the series begins.

About the Author

Nancy Lynn JarvisNancy Lynn Jarvis left the real estate profession after she started having so much fun writing the Regan McHenry Real Estate Mysteries series that she let her license lapse. She’s enjoyed writing about Regan and her husband, Tom, but decided it was time to do a new series.

PIP Inc. introduces protagonist downsized law librarian and not-quite-licensed Private Investigator Pat Pirard. “The Funeral Murder” is the second book in the series.

After earning a BA in behavioral science from San Jose State University, Nancy worked in the advertising department of the San Jose Mercury News. A move to Santa Cruz meant a new job as a librarian and later a stint as the business manager for Shakespeare/Santa Cruz at UCSC.

Currently, she’s enjoying being a member of Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, and Santa Cruz Women of Mystery.
