Angelica Davis is surprised when she finds out that an old school chum has returned to Willow Valley to take over his grandfather’s business. Since she writes articles for the Chronicle and Simon Morgan owns the Willow Valley News, they just happen to be rivals. The competition is on. Who will be the first to discover the identity of the jewel thief or the arsonist? Will it be Angelica or Simon? Gradually the feelings she once had for him return as they both search for the same stories. To her surprise, Angelica realizes she is losing her heart to her rival.
A Pleasant Rivalry by Linda Weaver Clarke is a tale of romance and mystery between the two rival reporters.
Will Angelica or Simon win the bet to see who can figure out the two mysteries?
Angelica Davis
Angelica Davis is our main female love interest and heroine of the story. She is a newspaper journalist who is after the truth and trying to get people to see about some things that aren’t right. For those stories, she writes under a pseudonym, Athena. Angelica writes the other stories that don’t have to deal with politics under her real name. She just wants to be kept busy, and she loves being able to dig for the truth about some things.
What I like about this character is that her stubbornness can be a good thing but also not really. That stubbornness makes her a great character as she tries to do somethings that she knows is right despite being a woman. Another thing that I like about her is that she is hesitant to be with Simon. Angelica’s father made her think about if Simon has the same goals of family, career, and religion as she does.
Simon Morgan
Simon Davis is out main male love interest and hero of the story. He has been gone from Willow Valley, Illinois, for thirteen years because he wanted to explore the world instead of being stuck in their small town. For thirteen years, Simon did just that until returning to run his grandfather’s newspaper business. However, that makes him a rival of Angelica’s, but he didn’t seem to care. Simon always seems to have placed a bet on something to see how far Angelica will go to prove him right or to get the story first. I love seeing that dynamic as it was there own way of flirting.
What I like about him is that he would do anything for Angelica to see his love for her while also doing what is best for himself. Let it be for placing a bet on something as trivial as going to a ball for a princess to get information from her about a source she got to talk to before he did.
Four Stars
A Pleasant Rivalry by Linda Weaver Clarke is a great historical romance between two rival journalists who are trying to out scoop the other. It’s an entertaining book and one I am giving four stars. I am also recommending it to anyone that likes to read historical romances that have a bit of mystery to them.
