When the owner of a sanctuary is killed in a cage, can a witch who can speak to animals solve the murder and find the missing phoenix?
When the owner of an animal sanctuary is found dead inside one of the cages, Jolene teams up with her hot cop boyfriend and his lie sniffing dog to catch the killer. But with rumors that the victim axed her millionaire husband, a second body, and a missing phoenix thrown in the mix, it’s turning into a zoo of a case.

On top of everything, the animals are giving her the silent treatment, and Jolene fears the sanctuary is hiding a dark secret.

Will this cursed witch be able to find the fire bird before it combusts, and bring the truth of the murders to light? Or will Jolene get burned as the whole thing goes up in flames?

The Squawking Dead is the seventh novel in the hilarious and enchanting Magic Market paranormal cozy mystery series. If you like talking animal sidekicks, delicious riddles, and cheeky female leads, then you’ll love Erin Johnson’s enchanting tale.

The Squawking Dead by Erin Johnson is an alluring read of trying to figure out what is going on at this animal sanctuary.

Can Jolene and Peter figure out what happened at the Night of the Phoenix party?

Jolene, Peter, and Daisy

Jolene is our sleuth, and wow is she in some deep doo-doo in here. She not only has to worry about being a police consultant, deal with Ludolf but also try to find a way to put him behind bars where he belongs. Jolene is a great character, and I love everything about her. Especially with the way Peter has been changing her since they first met. Peter is Jolene’s boyfriend in here, and they are cute. I can’t wait to see more with these two in the next installments. Daisy is getting used to the idea of Jolene being around and is putting up with her. Jolene and Daisy have a love-hate relationship that is, at times, leaning more toward love than hate at certain points.

These three are a great time, and I can’t wait to see more.

The Mystery

THE SQUAWKING DEAD CRThe mystery in this installment is quite a doozy. Meaning we have the case of what happened to Malorie’s first husband, what happened to Malorie herself, and now this mysterious lady who was in the cage? Oh, and what happened to the phoenix? All of these questions get answered in this story, don’t worry. I never guessed who did the murderers, but I did get the whole mystery of where all the animals came from as it was hard to tell. Apparently, this animal sanctuary isn’t as clean as a lot of people were led to believe. Won’t be saying anything else about that, though.

Five Stars

The Squawking Dead by Erin Johnson deserves five stars as it had me guessing until the point when it all clicked. So my earlier theory was wrong about Ludolf, but this series is so good. I can’t wait for the next installment but also hoping that it would be a bit longer. I’m also recommending this book to anyone that likes paranormal cozy mysteries.
