What could be more thrilling than solving a hundred-year crime? Ava and Carol enter a contest where the stakes are high. Find the famed Irish Crown Jewels and win a $10,000 prize. If anyone can locate these priceless treasures, it’s Ava and Carol, middle school super sleuths extraordinaire.

The girls, along with their friend Derik, embark on an adventure to solve the mystery of the missing jewels. If they win, they agree to use the reward money to help a mother with a physically challenged child get a much-needed surgery.

Ava and Carol uncover secrets hidden within historical landmarks. Join the girls as they trek across Concord and Lexington, Massachusetts and compete with other contestants, some of whom have nefarious intentions.

One mystery soon leads to another, forcing Ava, Carol, and Derik to use every detective skill they possess to crack the clues, and stay ahead of the competition.

If your child likes learning about history, and solving puzzles, this fun, fast-paced mystery will surely delight them.

The Crown Jewels Mystery by Thomas Lockhaven lets us see Ava and Carol solve clues in a scavenger hunt that leads the girls to a treasure.

Can Ava, Carol, and Derik find the treasure before anyone else?

Ava, Carol, and Derik

Ava and Carol team up with Derik, a classmate of theirs and maybe a crush of Carol’s, to solve these clues to get to the treasure. They all have the same idea of who to give their money to once they win. Ava, Carol, and Derik’s generous nature are fantastic to see in this series. I love the reason why they are giving their prize money to this one person in their lives. Every book of Ava and Carol’s makes me feel that I am not only getting to know the girls but watching them working as detectives makes me keep coming back for more. Plus, Ava and Carol make great protagonists in this series. Derik does well in this book by helping the girls and doing it in a way that makes it seems like he has been a part of their agency since the beginning.

The Mystery

The Crown Jewels Mystery CRAva and Carol, with the help of Derik, decide to enter this scavenger hunt to find the famed Crown Jewels of Ireland. Of course, they aren’t the real ones, but what do they know? Ava, Carol, and Derik quickly work with the first clue, and they uncover each of the three clues slowly but surely. Along the way, they have an adversary who wants to win this competition for the money and fame, not to help a mother with her child. Ava, Carol, and Derik are excellent investigators as they crack each clue as quickly as possible. I love how the three of them solve each of the clues and how they get the next clue. How in the world are they able to find the clue?

Five Stars

The Crown Jewels Mystery by Thomas Lockhaven is a fun way to learn about history. Ava and Carol also bring their detective skills to solve the mystery. Seeing how two middle graders can do that is incredible, and I love how Mr. Lockhaven does that. I would have loved having these books as a middle grader. Mr. Lockhaven brings to the table a great way to learn about history while also bringing to light that just because you are a kid doesn’t mean that you can’t be a detective or solve even just a scavenger hunt type of competition.

About Thomas Lockhaven

Thomas Lockhaven

You can blame my 7th grade English teacher, Mr. Ownby. I began writing mysteries in middle school, with gripping titles like, The Secret in The Swamp and The Ghost of Hollow Lake—Mr. Ownby, would kindly read them, and then encourage me to keep writing and reading the classics. His words, some day I’ll be reading your mysteries with the rest of the world inspired me.

Forty years later, I was able to fulfill my dreams and become a full time writer. When I began writing, I decided that my books would be a safe-haven from the real world. My children’s series all have strong messages of perseverance, thinking outside the box, friendship and loyalty. I have a daughter, and as I work through my manuscripts, I always try to imagine what I can say to inspire and entertain at the same time.

For my cozy readers, I spent much of my life traveling to small coastal towns in North Carolina and then later in my life to the coastal towns in New England. I’ve always loved the idiosyncrasies of the locals, and I’ve always wanted to bring them to life in a book series. My Coffee House Sleuths stories are just that. And just like my children’s books, I endeavor to write stories that are clean, with very little violence and no profanity. I do my best to help people disappear from the craziness of life, even if just for a little while.

I currently live in Boston, but my dream is to move to a small coastal town, stare out over the ocean, and to let the words flow. I have an incredible wife who constantly inspires and encourages me- and an amazing daughter who is my most harsh, but loving critic. As I said earlier, my passion is to write and to continually improve and perfect my craft. For those of you who read my books, I humbly thank you. For those of you who have never read my books, I welcome you with open arms.
