Magical cats Owen and Hercules and resourceful librarian Kathleen Paulson are back in the latest from the New York Times bestselling author of Faux Paw...   Kathleen is excited to meet three old pals of her beau, Detective Marcus Gordon, while they visit charming Mayville Heights on business. But the reunion is cut short when one of the friends is killed—and the evidence points toward Marcus as the murderer.   Though it seems she doesn’t know all of Marcus’s secrets, Kathleen is sure he’s no killer. With his suspect status sidelining him from investigating the case, it’s up to Kathleen and her feline partners-in-crime to find whoever is framing Marcus—and make sure the good detective hasn’t found his last clue.
From the Paperback edition.

Marcus wouldn’t kill anyone. Would he?

Paws and Effect by Sofie Kelly is a magical mystery. I love how the cats seem to know what is going on before Kathleen. Kathleen learned a few things she didn’t know in this installment. And not just about Marcus but also his father, and his partner.

The Set Up

Marcus is such a man of honor that Kathleen has a tough time believing that he is possible of killing his college friend. The person from the stories of Marcus’ college days, doesn’t even sound like him at all. Could it be that she doesn’t know what type of person she loves or are the stories skewed?

It seems that Marcus is very trusting and wants his college friends back in his life. At least Dani as they were close at one time. However, the hostility that Travis has for him is crazy, and John seems like he is fine either way. So, despite his apprehensions, Marcus invites these old friends into his life again. Let me say that it looks like a lot of this is going on of late.

The rest of the story

Kathleen teams up with Marcus’ partner, Hope, to find the real killer and exonerate Marcus. While she is still busy at the library getting ready for Halloween, going to Tia Chi, taking care of her cats and rescuing her friends from themselves, she is learning all that she can about Marcus’ college friends. Kathleen knows quite a few people in town, and she is getting to know some better in this installment.

Kathleen also learns about Marcus’ dad, Elliot, who it seems may be returning in future stories. I found this one part funny.

Kathleen picks up Marcus’s dad, Elliot and Burtis Chapman

I had no idea that Burtis could sing. Or Elliot, for that matter. They were rocking out to Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.” The jazz trio—guitar, bass and snare drum—looked like they were having just as much fun.

“They’re good,” I said softly. The manager gave me a look that told me I shouldn’t have said that out loud.

I wasn’t the only one who liked what I was hearing. The song ended and people began to clap enthusiastically. Burtis and Elliot bowed, acknowledging the applause. I made my way over to them, skirting around the tables. Burtis smiled when he caught sight of me.

“Kathleen, girl, what the hell are you doing here?” he asked.

“I thought you might need a limo driver,” I said.

“Are you tryin’ to say I’m too drunk to walk home?” he asked. I knew he wasn’t angry. I could see a devilish gleam in his eyes.

“Yes, I am,” I said.

He laughed, a deep booming sound that seemed to bounce off the walls. “Well, you’re right.” He turned to Elliot, gesturing at me with his free hand, his other arm still around Elliot’s shoulders. “That son of yours is a fine man,” he said. “And he’s a damn fine police officer, which I know you don’t wanna hear but I’m gonna say it anyway. But he was dumb as a glass of water when it came to her. Almost screwed it up big-time.”

“I’m parked out front,” I said. “Let’s go.”

“You tryin’ to shut me up or change the subject?” Burtis asked.

I smiled at him. “Either one will work for me.” I put my arm around Burtis’s shoulder, which had the effect of making me feel as though I’d just joined a very odd Vegas kick line.

5 Stars for Paws and Effect by Sofie Kelly

Paws and Effect by Sofie Kelly gets a five stars rating. I have read the other books in the Magical Cats Mystery series, and they don’t disappoint. The small town charm, the characters, Minnesota with all of the seasons and of course the magical cats are all divine. Oh, and the mystery keeps you guessing.

I truly recommend this book and the series. So, if you like cozy mysteries and cats, this is the series for you.
