Jen Talty About the Author

One of this month’s featured authors is Jen Talty

I was introduced to Jen Talty’s books through the Familiar Legacy Series. The Familiar Legacy series combines mystery, romance and the point of view of the black cat detective Trouble. I really enjoy reading these books.

Jen Talty has written one Trouble book Trouble’s Wedding Caper. She adds a bit of suspense to the mystery with the perfect amount of new romance. Jen also writes Romantic Suspense, Contemporary Romance, and Paranormal Romance.

I am so excited, let’s learn some more about Jen Talty.

Personal

Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?

I’m an introvert, but not shy, so most people think I’m extroverted. While I’m outgoing, I’m the kind of person who enjoys being alone, which is why writing is a great fit for me.

I enjoy spending my day at my desk, writing and researching. To break up the workday, I either ride my bike or go for a walk on the beach. I’m really a quiet simple girl who prefers a quiet evening at home with my own personal hero.

What inspired you to start writing?

Honestly, it was sort of out of boredom. My kids were little, and I was mostly a stay at home mom. I went to my local Wegmans and stood in front of the book racks and realized I had read almost every book there. After every book I read, I wondered what happened to the characters. I often made up more stories in my head about the characters and eventually, I was thinking about people I started to create. So, I snagged a notebook and a pen, and I went home and wrote a book. That book was the first book I ever published. The title is IN TWO WEEKS. I’ve been non-stop ever since.

Who is your favorite author?

This is not an easy question to answer. There are many authors I enjoy reading, so I don’t have one favorite. However, the book HELLO DARKNESS by Sandra Brown was the book that made me think I could write one. I have a lot of close friends that I look up and who have helped me with my craft. Jennifer Probst, Melinda Leigh, Gayle Callen, Maggie Shayne, Laura Benedict, and so many more. I’m also a huge fan of Bob Mayer. I was lucky enough to get to work with him for 9 years. I learned so much.

What is the first book that made you cry?

Bodyguard of Lies by Bob Mayer. Odd choice, but it’s true.

What book are you currently reading?

I’m reading a book a firefighting procedure. It’s nonfiction and for my new series.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

The power to heal people.

Where is one place you want to visit that you haven’t been before (real or imaginary)?

Egypt.

If you looked in your refrigerator right now, what would you find?

Mostly fruit and salad mixings.

Are you a better baker or cook or take out connoisseur?

I’m a baker.

Which do you prefer?

Tea or coffee:  Neither.

Movie or book:  Both equally.

Coke or Pepsi:  Coke.

Writing/Books

What do you love most about your writing process?

That I write every day. I also love that when I get stuck, all I have to do is go for a walk on the ocean and that seems to clear my head.

Do you like music or silence?

Music. Or sometimes I have the TV show friends in the background.

Do you have goals of certain # of words a week or when inspiration strikes?

I have deadlines, so it’s always based on words/pages. I write every day. If I waited for inspiration, I’d never write.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

Characters always hijack the story as I write. I often find things out that I didn’t know and then I have to go back and rewrite to make sure it all fits.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

Having a messy house. I can’t stand clutter, so If my house is trashed from company, or whatever, I can’t write until it’s clean.

Is anything in your book based on real-life experiences or purely all imagination?

My books are all set in places I’ve been. I draw on what I know in life, what I see around me, hear on the news, watch on television, so yes, some are real experiences, but mostly imagination. Really, it’s a blend of what I know, what I want to know, and what happens around me.

If you could spend time a character from your books whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

The hero from whatever book I’m working on at the moment and always walking the beach!

What genres do you write?

Romantic Suspense, Contemporary, and Paranormal.

What project are you working on now?

I’m working on two novels right now. Crash and Burn which comes out in May and Destiny’s Dream which will be out this fall. I’m also working on a new Firefighter/first responders series.

Do you have any other books coming out this year?

I have a few novellas and full-length novels coming out. Please check my website for updates: www.jentalty.com
