Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?

My name is Kelvyn Fernandes, author of The Many Adventures of Peter and Fi. I’m from Toronto, Canada, and my favorite passions outside reading include Nintendo games, the NFL, and adventuring in new places. Something not many people know about me is that I love talking to myself. Bouncing both sides of a conversation off each other is key to my problem-solving abilities, in writing and in life!

What inspired you to start writing?

Ever since I was a child, fantastical stories and incredible adventures have always sprung up easily in my mind. I’d love to watch a movie or read a book, and then imagine how I would’ve told the story or else take those characters on a new adventure. My own ideas would cascade over one another over days, weeks, and months, each new tale replacing the old one. The Many Adventures of Peter and Fi is the story I was finally ready to commit to paper, and I’m so happy with how it turned out.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

I’d love the ability to pause the flow of time and still be able to move and think freely. Obviously, I’d use this opportunity to get into all kinds of dangerous hijinks and selfishly get a leg up on everyone around me (except for cheating in games, that’s immoral). But more practically, I’d primarily use my powers to write to my heart’s content without interruption and always get a full night’s sleep.

Which do you prefer?

Tea or coffee? Tea, I don’t drink coffee.

Hot or cold? Hot all the way. Summer isn’t ever long enough

Movie or book? Book, movies just can’t tap into the imagination in the same way. Although I do watch a lot more of them…

Coke or Pepsi? Coke, my dad, drinks coke, so I drink coke. Simple as that. Although water is by far the best beverage.

What do you love most about your writing process?

I love the ideas that come to me on the fly. When I started writing, I never expected just how much of my story would be created as I wrote. I always have an outline that I follow pretty well, but inspiration strikes most once you’ve got a good flow going and good ideas lead into more good ideas. It gets to the point where I need to force myself to get back on track; otherwise, my chapters get too long, which is a great problem to have!

Do you like music or silence?

Music when I need to force myself to keep writing, silence when I get into that groove. If I need to keep myself focused on the task, a little lo-fi hum will keep me on task, but when I’m really absorbed in my writing, complete silence is best.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story, or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

All. The. Time. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t even feel like I’m in charge of the plot anymore. My main characters, Peter and Fi, have developed minds of their own and I feel like they’re the ones telling me what they’re saying or where they plan to go next. Sometimes I want to take my story in one direction, but it doesn’t fit with what Peter and Fi would actually do. They steer the narrative according to their own actions, and it doesn’t always end well for them when they do!

What is your writing Kryptonite?

Procrastination and distractions! The hardest part about writing is to start. Writing the first word, the first sentence, the first paragraph are such monumental challenges it seems, each and every day. When the entire internet is just a click away, I sometimes lose minutes, hours, even whole days, just putting off a job that I love, but a job nonetheless. The key, fortunately, or unfortunately depending on your mindset, is just to start. Start! And every word will come easier after the next one.

Do you have any other books coming out this year?

Yes! Volume II of Peter and Fi’s adventures is planned for release this summer/fall. Right now, I’m in the thick of writing and can’t wait to share it with the world! For those of you who’ve made it this far, I encourage you to try out Volume I: Homecoming for a fun, fantasy adventure. It would be awesome to have your company on this journey.

Follow Peter and Fi as they work together, each searching for something uniquely special to them through the four kingdoms of their known world. Excerpt

She emerged within a dark sea of green, shielding her eyes against the crescent moon’s pale blaze. The twinkling stars hummed softly, discordant against the chattering birds below. The lush leaves rippled in the breeze, tempting Fi to dip her toes in for a swim. The wind blew at her back and she turned east to face it. The fresh air carried the salty spray of the Shimmering Sea. Although she could not see it, she knew it was right there. Her ears caught the distant waves crashing against the shore. One last step, she thought.
