Best Halloween Tale Ever!

This movie has been my favorite Halloween movie to watch. Well besides Beetlejuice. Hocus Pocus is the first movie directed by Kenny Ortega’s that I watched and honestly the only one that I will probably keep watching over and over every year. Oh, wait, I already do watch it every year around Halloween. OK, sometimes it’s not around Halloween.

Directed by:        Kenny Ortega

Cast:      Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, Omri Katz, Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw, and Sean Murray

After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and their new friend, Allison (Vinessa Shaw). After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy) who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches’ book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.

The Sanderson Sisters

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy are the perfect Sanderson sisters. Bette Midler as Winifred the oldest sister. She was a tad bit scary when I was younger, but what a great performance. Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah the youngest is pretty funny. She was and is still my favorite of the Sanderson sisters. Kathy Najimy as the middle sister does a fabulous job scaring us and making us laugh. She also used to frighten me. Mostly because she could sniff out children!

The Good Guys

I loved all of the good guys. I remember being a little girl and having a slight crush on Thackery Binx who is now on NCIS as Timothy McGee. Guess Sean Murray as a thing for playing characters with names that start with a T. Omri Katz as Max did an excellent job of portraying that type of close sibling relationship with the incredible Thora Birch who plays Dani. Dani was a kid that I could relate to, as my older sister and I have that type of relationship. However, by the time I was watching it and remembering it, Thora Birch was a lot older than me. Binx, the cat, reminds me so much of my first cat Benny. Vinessa Shaw as Allison was someone that I wanted to be when I grew up. She is smart, kind, and beautiful.

The Book

To tie this into my review of Hocus Pocus and the All-New Sequel, that the author, A.W. Jantha, didn’t do a good job of making sure she got it right. The author missed some scenes and worked harder at pushing the sequel’s agenda. However, this loyal fan didn’t like her version. I am still a big fan of the movie, but the All-New Sequel sucks.

Book Review

Five Stars

I am giving the movie a five-star rating because it’s a Halloween movie that I love (any time of the year). It’s also one that I will probably never stop watching as I get older. Kenny Ortega did a fantabulous job. I loved the ending, and I think it doesn’t need any sequel ever!
