Relegated to a life without hope for anything more than a squalid existence at the bottom of the pecking order, Petunia, a backyard chicken, lives out her days in a flock where gossip flows as currency, with malice at its heart and boredom by its side. Petunia's plight seems insurmountable until a strange woman's tears hurl her through a labyrinth that she never anticipated and into a friendship she might not survive.

Petunia the odd chicken in her flock is torn about wanting to be with the flock and helping a human

Claws, Paws, Feathers & Jaws by Katie Christine is a great novel set in the countryside with a nice cottage and chickens. The chickens are the main focus of this story.

Petunia, the Chicken

Petunia, the chicken, is the main character and we follow her through her journey. She is bullied by the other chickens and just surviving the day-to-day life of being a chicken. Petunia is different than the other chickens. She wants to be near their human caretaker and help her out. What I like about Petunia is that she is an interesting main character and I love the way she interacts with Silkie, the human caretaker, is funny.

Macy, the Cat

Macy, the cat, is at first an antagonist but not really. He likes to think he can hunt, but he can’t make the kill. Macy is trying to have some fun and blow off steam when he pretends to chase. What I like about Macy is that when he shows his true colors, it’s a pretty fantastic transformation despite what Silkie thinks.

Bernadette, the Chicken

Bernadette, the chicken, is the main antagonist of the novel. She has never liked Petunia and is continuously trying to show to her mom, Bryn, that she belongs in the leading chicken group. Throughout the story, Bernadette has been either trying to get Petunia cast out of the flock or killed. She is not a sweet chicken and isn’t one of my favorite characters.

Five Star

Claws, Paws, Feathers & Jaws by Katie Christine did an excellent job with this book. Mr. Edwards, her husband, did a fabulous job on the illustrations at the beginning of each chapter. Petunia, her friends, and enemies were all fantastic characters. I never thought that I would be rooting for a chicken. My rating for this book is five stars.
