Will she accept his offer before the clock strikes midnight?

Sophie Beckett never dreamed she'd be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton's famed masquerade ball—or that "Prince Charming" would be waiting there for her! Though the daughter of an earl, Sophie has been relegated to the role of servant by her disdainful stepmother. But now, spinning in the strong arms of the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton, she feels like royalty. Alas, she knows all enchantments must end when the clock strikes midnight.

Who was that extraordinary woman? Ever since that magical night, a radiant vision in silver has blinded Benedict to the attractions of any other—except, perhaps this alluring and oddly familiar beauty dressed in housemaid's garb whom he feels compelled to rescue from a most disagreeable situation. He has sworn to find and wed his mystery miss, but this breathtaking maid makes him weak with wanting her. Yet, if he offers his heart, will Benedict sacrifice his only chance for a fairy tale love?

An Offer From a Gentleman by Julia Quinn is a rendition of Cinderella. Although, I am not sure if Benedict makes a good Prince Charming.

Will Sophie find a way beyond her heritage? Can Benedict see beyond his prejudice?

Sophie Beckett

Sophie is kind and tries to find happiness in everything. I was rooting for this girl from the beginning. However, her family treats her terribly, and her father’s belief that his horrid wife could be anything other than cruel to Sophie is appalling. Sophie is stubborn but principled, sweet, and caring. She is such a lovely person. It was touching how she is able to forgive Posy and move forward.

Benedict Bridgerton

An Offer From a Gentleman CRSo, Benedict may be a Bridgerton, but I didn’t feel that he stood up to the family’s character during his quest for Sophie. He didn’t listen to what his mother told him about class and how she only wished that he could find love. His ‘offer” the first time rejected should have been enough to keep a gentleman in his place, but he just kept going. I know this was the plot so that he could find happiness, but I didn’t care for his prejudice. I know regency time; yes, yes, I got it. He is just lucky that Sophie is such a sweet person.

Violet Bridgerton

This woman is such a fine character, and she always seems to find a way to help her children. Violet loves them each for the person that they are. If only they would listen to her once in a while.

“Only you will be able to make this decision,” Violet continued, bringing Benedict’s thoughts back to the here and now, “and I ‘m afraid it won’t be an easy one.”
He stared out the window, his silence his agreement.
“But,” she added, “should you decide to join your life with someone not of our class,  I will of course support you in every possible manner.”
Benedict looked up sharply. There were few women of the ton who would say the same to their sons.
“You are my son,” she said simply, “I would give my life for you.”

Other Family Members

In this installment, we see more of the other three daughters. We also meet Sophie’s stepmother and stepsister, of which only Posey is mentionable. There is a bit of Daphne, Anthony, and Colin, but not much.

Four Stars

I like the whole Cinderella spin; using the glove instead of a slipper is creative. The ‘stepfamily’ part was right on. I just didn’t care for the way that Benedict conducted his courtship. Yes, again, regency era. My rating for An Offer From a Gentleman by Julia Quinn is four stars. It is a good story and one that I feel we will need to further the series. So, if you are reading the series, you won’t want to leave it out.

About Julia Quinn

Julia Quinn

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don’t read (or write) romance, and and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code.

A graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books have been translated into 32 languages, and she lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page.
