Their romance shaped a nation. The rest was history.

1777. Albany, New York.

As battle cries of the American Revolution echo in the distance, servants flutter about preparing for one of New York society’s biggest events: the Schuylers’ grand ball. Descended from two of the oldest and most distinguished bloodlines in New York, the Schuylers are proud to be one of their fledgling country’s founding families, and even prouder still of their three daughters—Angelica, with her razor-sharp wit; Peggy, with her dazzling looks; and Eliza, whose beauty and charm rival that of both her sisters, though she’d rather be aiding the colonists’ cause than dressing up for some silly ball.

Still, she can barely contain her excitement when she hears of the arrival of one Alexander Hamilton, a mysterious, rakish young colonel and General George Washington’s right-hand man. Though Alex has arrived as the bearer of bad news for the Schuylers, he can’t believe his luck—as an orphan, and a bastard one at that—to be in such esteemed company. And when Alex and Eliza meet that fateful night, so begins an epic love story that would forever change the course of American history.

Alex and Eliza by Melissa de la Cruz is the beginning of Alex and Eliza’s lovely marriage.

Can Alex win Eliza’s heart?

Elizabeth Schuyler

Eliza is the middle child of the three pair of older sisters of the Schuyler line. Being the middle sister, she is often overlooked even though she is just as charming and beautiful as her older and younger sister. Eliza is intelligent, knows what she wants in a man, and is very much into the fight for their independence. She is also into helping the soldiers in any way she can. Eliza does that by mending the soldiers’ clothes or anything else deemed helpful that only a woman can pull off. I like Eliza as a character, and I hope she likes how her country has turned out.

Alex and Eliza CR

Alexander Hamilton

Alexander Hamilton is a colonel in the Continental Army and is the secretary to General George Washington. He is trying his hardest to gain the fortune and prestige that come with a name since he was born without that honor. Alex has a great mind that picks up numbers quickly, and he was studying to be a lawyer before the war started. Unfortunately, this young man often gets caught up in his own mind. Alex did that when he was courting Eliza. Well, sort of courting her. I have to say that I do like Alex as well since he seems like a fine gentleman who does his best not to allow any harm to come to any woman.

The Romance

Eliza, at first, didn’t seem like she wanted anything to do with the one and only Colonel Alexander Hamilton. That all changes when she goes down to New Jersey to help out her aunt and uncle. Seeing how Ms. Cruz thought up their romance and how it all went down was a treat I immensely enjoyed.

Five Stars

I am giving five stars to Alex and Eliza by Melissa de la Cruz and recommending it. This is an excellent story of how two people fell in love while helping to shape our dear country. Ms. Cruz did a fantastic job of reimagining a love story lost to time. I especially liked how she shows the difficulties of finding love during a war.
