Do you or your child like the old Scooby Doo cartoons? Malaya named their group WECU Inc. modeling it after the Scooby Doo group's name 'Mystery Inc.' Kieran is enamored with ninjas. They band with three neighborhood boys to investigate mysteries in the huge, old apartment building in which they live.
The WECU group really comes together after a notable success, discovering a serious crime. One of the boys recommends that the group enter a story-writing contest. This results in the second half of the book alternating between chapters with the group in real life and chapters in which they develop a fantasy story with themselves as characters.
WECU Inc by Rick Stevens has Kieran making the best of his new home life by making new friends and solving mysteries.
Will Kieran like his new home?
The Kids
Kieran makes four friends, which eventually turns into five later in the book. Malaya, who lives in the apartment building, is the first new friend he meets after moving into his foster family. These two eventually turn into the best of buds because they live in the same building, so they can talk to each other faster and do things. Kieran’s next friend is named Arthur. Arthur doesn’t live in the same building as Kieran and Malaya, but he is great at computers, so he ends up helping on the sidelines. The following two are Dex and Jerry. Dex and Jerry are former bullies turned good guys when they start to hang out with Kieran and Malaya.
I don’t have a favorite character among this group of kids because we don’t see many of them.
The Mysteries
Kieran and Malaya are the masterminds behind WECU Inc. and have access to their apartment building. They eventually recruit others to their mystery-solving group as they get more cases. WECU Inc. solves four cases in the book. Granted, some weren’t cases, just things they would hear from the basement. It’s hard to explain things without giving much away from the story.
Three Stars
My rating for WECU Inc. by Rick Stevens is three stars. I had difficulty staying in the book because of some formatting issues and no indicators of when one scene ended and another began.
