Ethan lives a secret life as a Guardian of the Named. Under the guidance of Arkarian, his mentor, and with the help of Isabel, his unlikely but highly capable apprentice, Ethan has become a valued member of this other-worldly corps. As the only defense against the evil Order of Chaos, the Named travel through time to prevent the Order from altering history and thereby gaining power in the present and the future.

As the threat from the Order intensifies, secrets of the past are revealed and villains and heroes are exposed. This gripping fantasy is set in modern times, but is infused with intrigue from the past, super-natural characters and surprising plot twists. Curley has written a winner through to the end.

The Named by Marianne Curley is about Ethan getting Isabel to believe in who they truly are.

Will Ethan get Isabel trained in time for their first mission together?

Ethan

Ethan Roberts is our first point of view main character, and it is cool to see things through his perspective. He has been with the Guardians of Time since he was little. Ethan’s skills help him do things that he probably wouldn’t have done in the first place. Ethan is an awesome character. His perspective on some things shows us how easy it has influenced him to use one of his powers to show Isabel accidentally. This may break some more of their codes of conduct. Each time though, he felt that it was needed to be done. I like this character a lot, and I can’t wait to see what else goes on with him.

The Named CRIsabel

Isabel Becket is our other point of view main character. She doesn’t know about her unique talents besides being able to heal when Isabel yells at herself to heal a wound that she accidentally gives herself. Isabel is a newbie to the Guardians of Time, and she has a lot to prove to them. Not only that, but Isabel needs help with using swords and other things that she may need to use in the past. That is because Isabel must protect herself in the past besides healing her fallen friends. I liked Isabel a lot and was rooting for her in both perspectives to get something right or to see reason with what Ethan was telling her.

Five Stars

The Named by Marianne Curley is the first book in a remarkable series that I have been dying to read for a while. I loved this book immensely. It is set in Australia, which is foreign to this American. But my brain immediately transfers any words that look a bit weird to what I would typically say. Ms. Curley has done a fantastic job of writing this book and I am off to read to the next book, The Dark, soon. My rating for The Named by Marianne Curley is five stars, and I am giving it a huge recommendation for this entire series for any young adult fantasy readers out there.

About Marianne Curley

I got this biography of Marianne Curley from her Goodreads account:

I loved reading from a young age and scoured my school libraries during my younger years, but I never thought I would become a writer. It was not until my mid-thirties while teaching office studies and computers to adults at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus that I began to think seriously about writing. I took several courses and experimented with different styles and genres. With two teenage daughters at the time, I fell into writing young adult paranormal and have never looked back.

My first four novels, Old Magic, The Named, The Dark and The Key, were published by Bloomsbury Publishing in Australia, the UK, and the USA, with translations into more than a dozen foreign languages.

In 2004, just as The Key was being prepared for printing, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone marrow cancer called Myelofibrosis. With only a short time to live, I was given a stem-cell bone marrow transplant using my sister’s cells, which saved my life. I have now been cancer free for fourteen years and have written a new trilogy called The Avena Series. All three books – Hidden, Broken and Fearless were published between 2013 and 2015.

My latest book is The Shadow, the long-awaited and much anticipated fourth book in The Guardians of Time Series. The Shadow will be released in March 2018.

I am presently working on a YA paranormal/time travel story, and a contemporary novel based on real events.
