Summary:

Samantha thought following a mysterious diary around the French Quarter of New Orleans would be a harmless way to learn about her new hometown until it became about murder.

As the newest resident of Thibodeaux Mansion, West Coast transplant Samantha is looking forward to starting her thirties in a new place. Drawn to New Orleans for its music, food and history, she’s excited to start her future in this unique city. But Samantha is also hopeful she’ll find her past since she was adopted from Louisiana after being orphaned in a hurricane as a toddler.

An anonymous diary, unusual key, and a distinctive doll are left in her furnished apartment and her mostly friendly neighbors all deny leaving the gifts. Samantha, now Sammy to her new friends, can’t believe any of them could be a liar. When the diary leads her to a dead body, Sammy needs to find out what these clues mean and what the murderer is trying to tell her.

Although her best friends Sissy and Andrew are happy to help her with this mystery, her other friends aren’t sure the murder and diary are about Sammy. Not wanting to lose her newfound friendships and possible love interest, Sammy decides she must uncover the answers on her own.

Sammy moved to New Orleans looking for a new future, but is it her past that found her first?

The Key to Murder is the first book in the The French Quarter Mysteries featuring West Coast transplant Samantha Richardson settling into her new hometown, New Orleans. Her neighborhood is full of music, food and history as well as interesting people. Join Sammy as she explores the Big Easy by solving the mysteries of the past and present in this new modern, cozy mystery series.

Interview with Samantha Richardson

How did you and your author meet?

I met my author, Jen, when she was walking down Royal Street in New Orleans. Just like me, she enjoys peaking through the gates to courtyards and imagining who lives there. And now I live in of those apartment buildings with a beautiful courtyard.

Why did this writer decide to feature you in a book?

If I may so say myself, I think I have a pretty good life! I love exploring new places and I love mysteries. Moving to New Orleans on my own is a great adventure and I’m excited about whatever it brings. I like to think I’m open-minded, friendly, and inquisitive — all things that make for a great amateur sleuth.

Do you have any friends or family helping you out?

One reason I moved to New Orleans was to find out if I had any of my biological family left. After being orphaned, my adoptive parents moved to Florida, but I’m pretty sure I’m from here. I’m looking for my family, but my new neighbors are turning out to be good friends, maybe even family.

Do you have a regular job and investigate on the side or are you a full time detective?

When I lived in San Francisco, I was an administrative assistant. Now that I’m in New Orleans, I’m taking a work break while I decide what to do next. I’d love to work in a bookshop. So for now I do my investigations on the side.

What is the funniest thing that happens to you or another character in this story?

I do find myself in a few awkward situations, but the time I thought someone was following me in the Mardi Gras exhibit at the Presbytere was pretty funny. I won’t give it away, but I was pretty embarrassed. But I can laugh at the situation now.

Have you solved other cases or is this your first one?

This was my first murder mystery that I solved. When I was apartment hunting, I solved a mystery about a painting at Artistic Coffee & Creations. My author wrote about it in an exclusive short story for her newsletter members, Coffee, a Scone, and a Place to Call Home.

Do you have a gift or special talent?

I’m not sure it’s very special, but I can read upside down. It’s a skill I picked up working as an administrative assistant. But I’d like to think my gift is solving mysteries.

Who is the most important individual in your life?

Since my adopted parents died, my friend Madeline has been my closest friend. She’s in San Francisco though and I hope to make some close friends in my new hometown. I’m single, but perhaps I’ll have better luck with boyfriends here.

What is your ideal vacation?

Before I moved, I would have said New Orleans. Now that I live here, I would say Sanibel Island, Florida. My parents and I used to go there. The clear blue water of the Gulf of Mexico always relaxes me.

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?

I wish I could remember my birth parents, but I hope to find out who they were. But other than that, I’m happy with my life now that I’m living in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
