Character Interview with Robyn Cavanagh

How did you and your author meet?

We met on a sunny Sunday morning when we were both taking a long walk through the neighborhood. I was with my dog, Yogi. Jeanne asked if she could pet him, and we fell into conversation. We’d seen each other from afar on several occasions, but this was the first morning we were close enough to say hello. We discovered we had a lot in common, and since then we’ve taken many walks together.

Why did this writer decide to feature you in a whole series of books?

Jeanne’s an amateur photographer (emphasis on amateur!) and thought it would be fun and interesting to write about a portrait photographer who solves crimes.

Do you have any friends or family helping you out?

Oh, yeah. My parents love to assist me, and my older sister, Meredith, has been an asset. My friend Will Vonderlin is my main partner. We’ve had wonderful adventures together while chasing leads in murder cases.

Do you have a regular job and investigate on the side or are you a full-time detective?

My main source of income is accounting. I have my own business in my hometown of Garland, New York. A few years ago I started a second career in portrait photography, which I hope to turn into the more profitable part of my work life. Being self-employed allows me time to play detective, and sometimes I’m fortunate enough to combine work and sleuthing.

What is the funniest thing that happens to you or another character in this story?

This may be more amusing than funny, but it was comic relief that I needed in a tense moment. I was at a client’s house for a photo session. I believed the woman had helpful information to the case I’m working on, so I asked discreet questions while snapping photos. The woman started asking me what I knew about the investigation. I didn’t want to share—I have sources to protect—and didn’t like being backed into the corner with the twinkling Christmas tree. The situation was getting too close for comfort, and then the woman’s finicky cat bounded into the room, ready to pose for my camera. With one meow, the subject was changed. I have yet to break the news to my dog that I was saved by a cat.

Have you solved other cases or is this your first one?

This is my third case! I’ve solved the murder of a high school math teacher and the death of a man who had just been named the head of his estranged wife’s family business. The case I’m working on now—the death of a wealthy real estate developer—is particularly tricky and requires discretion. Russell Nowak was killed during a Christmas party at the Garland home of his companion, publisher Natalie Hoffmann. Because there were many prominent people at the party, I have to be careful and not let any of them think that I suspect them of the murder.

Do you have a gift or a special talent?

I have an eye for detail that is helpful in my photography work. That attention for the small things is also an asset in sorting through the puzzle of a murder case.

Who is the most important individual in your life?

That’s a difficult question! My parents, of course, are very important to me. I cherish my siblings. I adore my sweet dog. Will is becoming more important to me; our relationship is becoming central to my life.

What is your ideal vacation?

I love green space, so a trip to the mountains soothes my mind. Time in the Adirondack Mountains always relaxes me. The beautiful towns and lakes are also perfect models for my camera.

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?

I have a long list of photography jobs I’d love to do. I’m a bit impatient about turning these daydreams into reality. While investigating Russell Nowak’s death, I’ve had the opportunity to spend time with one of Natalie’s authors and was even invited to the woman’s home for a Christmas card photo session. If she’s happy with the portfolio, maybe she’ll ask me to take her photo for the book jacket of her next bestseller. Fingers crossed that she likes my work, and that she isn’t the killer!
