Till death do us part, with kitchen shears. What drives a family man to kill his wife? This question haunts Sarah James, a medical resident who meets the unhappy family at a resort near Big Sur. She witnesses how ugly a marriage can be. But murder?
Sarah and the spunky Fog Ladies—elderly neighbors from her San Francisco apartment building—set out to discover the truth. Their probing finds the threat is perilously close to home, as another troubled family struggles to survive.
The Fog Ladies Family Matters by Susan McCormick is a wonderful spin on a cozy mystery. I truly enjoyed the mixture of generations and personalities.
Will the Fog Ladies figure out if the murders are connected and who is behind them before it is too late?
The Fog Ladies
The Fog ladies consist of Frances Noonan, Enid Carmichael, Harriet Flynn, Alma Gordo, Olivia Honeycut, and Sarah James. Sarah is a resident doctor at a local hospital and the youngest member. The other ladies are all single, mostly widows except for Enid.
“Sarah gave the group their name because Frances Noonan told her that you could count on them like you could count on early morning fog. Every morning Sarah heard the weather report on the radio and every morning it was the same – early morning fog burning off by midday. San Francisco weather was a constant you could count on and so were the Fog Ladies.”
Their personalities are all so different, and they each grow a bit throughout the story. Well, except Enid, but every group of friends has an Enid. She is nosy, grouchy, thinks she is better than most.
These ladies as so curious about what is going on around them. Yet, they stop and find ways to make the situation better. They call them projects. Whether they are helping out at the hospital, quilting with women prisoners, or helping to babysit the next generations, they keep moving forward and living. I think they are fabulous and remind me of the group of ladies that my grandmother used to hang with.
The Mystery
Although these ladies don’t just have projects, they are also looking for a serial killer as they want to help the man who was accused of killing his wife, leaving his young son to be raised by his grandmother. A young wife is convicted of killing her husband, leaving her twin daughters in her brother’s care. Then we have a husband convicted for killing his young wife and allowing his young son to wander around the apartment building. They see connections that the police may not have since the slayings were done in different states. So, these women set out to make sure that the correct people are in jail. There are many connections, but the Fog Ladies figure it out in the end.
Five Stars
I am giving The Fog Ladies Family Matters by Susan McCormick five stars for many reasons. The characters themselves are fabulously developed. And I love that we get to bounce into each other the points of view. I love the setting of San Francisco. Seriously, it’s beautiful. This cozy mystery is different as it takes the ladies quite a while to solve the mystery. I am not actually sure how long, but over a year for sure. So, again five stars and a recommendation to check out these Fog Ladies and their mysteries.
