Lose yourself in this beautiful romantic comedy set in a land of sleigh rides, sparkling starry skies and gingerbread cottages. Perfect for fans of Karen Swan, Katie Fforde and Jill Mansell.
Christmas is coming but it doesn’t feel that way for Esme Greenwood. Recently jilted by her cheating fiancee Warren, she’s had enough of London life and escapes to Thimble Cottage in the Peak District, home of her beloved grandmother Matilda.
While Esme mourns for the wedding she’ll never have, Matilda puts her granddaughter back together again with comforting words and generous helpings of fruitcake and together, they plan the trip of a lifetime, to Lapland to see the northern lights, somewhere Matilda has always dreamt of going.
But tragedy strikes and when Matilda dies, Esme screws up the courage to go on the trip on her own to honour her beloved grandmother’s wishes. At the airport she meets a motley crew of characters including Zach, a handsome, brooding, out-of- work actor and together they set off for an adventure.
Beneath the indigo skies of Lapland, Esme and Zach grow closer. But when Esme is bombarded by messages from Warren promising he’s changed and she discovers that Zach is hiding something very significant - will her head be turned? And when a trip to the northern lights reveals the full extent of Zach’s own secret past, is there any hope that Esme will get the happy ending that her grandmother wished for her?
Grandma’s Christmas Gift May Change Everything
The Christmas Wish by Tilly Tennant is magical, humorous, happy, melancholy and filled with what could be real life moments. I adored this story, and at points it made me cry, both happy and sad tears, then laugh out loud.
Esme Greenwood
Our heroine is Esme. She has lost herself in a horrible relationship and ran to her Grandma. Esme had goals and plans for life, but she let Warren sidetrack those dreams. However, Esme’s strength and self-worth grow under her Grandma’s care.
Esme is young and a people pleaser. She didn’t even see what was happening to her. Esme just wanted to be loved, and she was willing to do whatever she felt was needed.
I was pulling for Esme from the beginning. She just needs to find who she is and be true to herself.
Matilda Greenwood
Matilda is Esme’s Grandma. She is strong and self-sufficient. Matilda lives alone since the death of her husband, so having Esme there is a welcome change. However, she wants her granddaughter to be happy like she was before Warren entered her life. Matilda is tired and not physically capable as she once was.
I loved Matilda. She is an excellent character, who took good care of her family. I liked that she didn’t always get-a-long with Esme’s mom and that she had a good healthy marriage.
This story reminds us of the importance of grandparents and how much they can teach a child or an adult. Grandparents have the wisdom and the love that fill us with peace and acceptance.
Warren the Dick
He is a good looking man, who makes himself feel better by manipulating women. Warren finds someone that is beautiful and seems strong-willed, and then he sets out to change her into what he wants her to be. He is jealous not because he feels she will be unfaithful, but he doesn’t want her to realize what a jerk he is.
I had an immediate dislike of this character. Yep, I have met men like him in my own life. However, I am sure he will get his up incomings, especially once he loses his good looks.
Zach
Zach is part of the group that help Esme figure out what she wants to do next. However, Zach has his troubles and isn’t always available for Esme or the group.
I like Zach he has a good head on his shoulders, but he doesn’t want to talk about his troubles. He is a good guy.
Here is a quote from the book, where Zach tells Esme to be herself.
He let out a sigh. ‘There you go – wanting to change to order. That’s exactly what I’m talking about. How about just being you, regardless of what you think anyone else might want. You’ll probably find that just you, exactly the way you are, is what they do want. Be you, warts and all. If they don’t like the warts, then ditch the people and not the warts. Find someone who does like the warts.’

My thoughts
This book takes place in England and Lapland, Finland. I will be honest, being from the United States I had never heard of Lapland, Finland. So, I had to do a little internet digging. What a wonderful place! I have now added it to my bucket list. I would love to spend Christmas there.
Here are two sites that I found about Lapland. Visit Finland Lapland
I thought this book was so completely marvelous. The characters are superb, their self-growth and eccentrics so believable. The subplots are funny and kept me entertained.
