Gilly Carter has kept her lofty inheritance a secret from her coworkers, knowing first-hand how money changes people. But when she’s forced to rely on more than her bank account, will she rise to the task?
After winning teacher of the year last spring, she’s pumped to begin the new school year. Her fantasies of rainbow colored bookshelves and students giggling at her math puns are dampened when she discovers Christopher Callahan, a one-night stand who ghosted her, is not only her co-worker, but they’re paired together to teach first grade.
While he’s kind to everyone else, Christopher doesn’t even try to hide his distaste for Gilly. He turns his nose up at her extravagant classroom decorations and accuses her of not teaching from her heart. When Christopher challenges her to a spirit week competition where neither of them can spend a cent, Gilly doubles down: she freezes her funds for the entire month, vowing to live off her teacher’s salary alone.
As they grow from enemies to lovers, Gilly knows she must come clean with Christopher about being an heiress, but a bigger threat looms—a blast from the past well-versed in blackmail.
With the freeze on her funds, Gilly is forced to do things the hard way. But if she loses Christopher in the process, no amount of cash will heal her broken heart.
Teaching With the Enemy by Jaqueline Snowe is about how two enemies become something much more than they bargained for.
Will Gilly be able to come clean to Christopher?
Gilly Carter
Gilly Carter is an heiress that is used to having money around and spends it without thinking much about it. The biggest thing I like about Gilly is that she’s an heiress, but she’s afraid of telling people that she is one because they might use her to get to her money. Another thing that I like about her is that it took her a while to get used to not spending her money, and she handled it so well. Sure it sucked, but she had a plan, and she followed through. Gilly’s reasoning for wanting to be a teacher is also lovely as well. I’m not too fond of some things about her, but I can’t say since they are spoilers. However, I will tell you that Gilly isn’t good at handling certain things that she inadvertently caused to happen a while back.
Christopher Callahan
Christopher Callahan isn’t a person who ghosts girls after sleeping with them and then shows up at their school to teach alongside them, but that is what happened. He seems like a good person who has a troubled past, especially when dealing with money. Chris does change throughout the story, and I love seeing that through Gilly’s eyes. It was also cute to see how much Gilly loves him. Chris has his faults, though, that show throughout and make it hard for him to trust Gilly. The things that I like about him are that he makes Gilly a better person and makes her realize that maybe she shouldn’t be spending her money all willy nilly.
Along with the fact that he is the complete opposite of her which makes them pretty funny. I only have one dislike about him. Chris is very stubborn, and because of his stubbornness, he can’t see things clearly that might not make sense at the time.
Four Stars
I love reading the stories that Ms. Snowe imagines up since I feel like I’m actually there with the characters and experiencing these things with them. Gilly and Christopher are a cute couple, and I hope that they get to stay happily ever after, much like grumpy Brock and peppy Grace are. Another person that I’m hoping gets a happily ever after is Gilly’s brother Fritz. I’m giving Teaching With the Enemy by Jaqueline Snowe four stars, and I’m recommending it to all my adults readers.
