SUMMER SECRETS...KIDNAPPING AND MURDER. Erin Walsh arrives home to tiny New Belford, Kentucky from college only to clash with her young stepmother, Shelby Rae. When Shelby Rae is kidnapped and a dear friend of the family is murdered, Erin discovers that both victims had secrets connected to the violent death of her mother seven years earlier. In a small town the pool of suspects is limited, but it also means the danger to Erin’s own life is deathly close.
Noah Daly, an old high school friend, is the son of the man everyone blames for the violent death of Erin’s mother. But he’s also the one person Erin feels she can trust to help her find Shelby Rae’s kidnapper and her friend’s murderer. Or is her sudden attraction to him blinding her to his true nature?
Enter Trouble, the wise and wily black cat detective. His paws have barely landed in the bluegrass when he realizes Erin is about to put herself in danger. Can he lead Erin to the truth before she becomes a victim herself?
Trouble in Kentucky
Small Town Trouble by Laura Benedict is a marvelous mystery about greed and secrets in a small town and how they can destroy lives. Thank goodness Trouble was there to help Erin and Noah find a killer and possibly love.
Erin Walsh
Our female lead is Erin. She is a college student home or the summer. Erin seems to have outgrown her hometown or perhaps she is just growing up. Erin doesn’t care for her step-mother, but she also tries to keep the peace for her father.
I immediately liked Erin. She has a beautiful disposition and seems to see the positive most of the time. However she isn’t naïve, she knows that there is more going on than people are sharing in her small home town.
Noah Daly
Noah Daly is our male lead; he is the bad boy type who rides a motorcycle and comes from a bad family. However, he is tied to Erin through the death of her mother.
Even though Noah has the bad boy rep, he has a kind heart. He takes care of his mom, and he is reliable at work. Noah works for Erin’s dad at his Ford dealership. I liked Noah, but I felt that he underestimated his father. Not that I know what he could have done about it.
Trouble
Trouble was staying with the Walsh family while Tammy Lynn is in Italy appraising some antique books. Our black cat detective wasn’t being entertained at first. He was utterly annoyed by a Jack Russel Terrier named Jocko. The little dog was trying to steal Trouble’s thunder. It was comical.
Trouble played an integral part in finding the clues that were needed to figure out the killer’s identity. He put himself in a couple of dangerous places to keep Erin safe.
Mystery
The mystery is as a little dark but enjoyable. The suspense in this book is right there; it was perfect. It had me literally on the edge of my seat. I didn’t figure it out until Trouble did
