Food and Adventure = Love
Sam n Patty’s 1st Adventure by Jerry Dawson is a lovely little mystery. A short novel to read on a rainy spring evening.
Sam has it together, he is an independent photographer. He makes enough to get by, which Sam seems to do quite well. Besides selling photos to newspapers and magazines, he also does weddings or whatever to make it. Although, Sam is stubborn and sometimes it seemed like he had tunnel vision, focusing only on what he wanted.
Patty is young and naïve. She is a food critic journalist who is still learning her way. At times she is the damsel in distress, other times she has it all together and is in your face. I had mixed feelings about her throughout the story. Their romance is slight but you can feel their fondness for each other grow through the book.
The mystery was good. All of the clues tracked and made sense at the end. The bad guy was a down on his luck mountain guy who supposedly hunted and knew the North Carolina Mountains well enough to survive without assistance. However, he couldn’t find Sam and Patty (who seemed like city people) when they took off in the forest between his own home and the road. I guess he just wasn’t as good as he bragged about.
My rating for Sam n Patty’s 1st Adventure is 4 stars. I was slightly confused by the cover and title. I thought I might have the wrong book at first. However, I was surprised by the plot and the cast of characters. It was a delightfully fast read.
