Mount Gretna is a community where artists and scholars come every summer to live and work in perfect harmony. However, when that harmony is disturbed by the discovery of a dead body, the local sheriff reaches out to an unlikely resident for help. Best known for bird watching and chewing tobacco, August Summerfield moved to Mount Gretna to enjoy retirement and reconnecting with his niece, Grace. When she urges her uncle to help with the case, Grace begins to learn about her uncle’s secret past in Washington DC. She also learns that he has a sharp eye for details. Whether thwarting assassinations in Washington, D. C., or solving a murder in Mount Gretna, August Summerfield knows that when looking for suspects, “the devil can be found in the details.”
Morning Mist and Murder by Allen B. Boyer is a fast-paced mystery set in the 1960s.
Will August and Grace find the culprits before the summer crowd is scared away?
Grace Walker
Grace lives in her family home year-round at Gretna Lake. Gretna Lake is a home for artists, writers, and actors. Grace recently lost her mother, and now her Uncle August has bought the house next door to Grace. This is nice for Grace as her grief is still raw, but having August there has kept some of the sorrow and pain away.
I like Grace. However, she has privilege even in the 1960s. However, she seems lost and doesn’t know what to do with herself. I understand her grieving, but it feels like she lacks ambition too.
August Summerfield
August is our sleuth, he is not a professional investigator, but he is retired from the secret service. So, perhaps he is. August has a superb eye for details that most people don’t recognize. Although, he isn’t liked by most of the residents of Gretna Lake as he doesn’t hide away or play their political games. You could say that August is more intelligent than most of the townsfolk.
I honestly don’t know if I would want August as a friend. He isn’t polite or friendly unless he wants something. He is also quite moody.
The Mystery
There are two mysteries in the story. August ends up tasked with figuring out who murdered and left the man at the lakeshore. Then there are the swasticas that are showing up in the woods. Are they connected or two different crimes?
Four Stars
I enjoyed the mystery and the author’s unique writing style. Although I didn’t find the two main characters thrilling, they are good characters. My rating for Morning Mist and Murder by Allen B. Boyer is four stars. If you are looking for a solid mystery, this one may work for you.
