Imogen’s Poppy Seed Cake

On July 5th I baked Imogen’s Poppy Seed Cake.  The one that is in Erin Johnson’s Seashells, Spells & Caramels along with some of the other books. It is mentioned in Airships, Crypts & Chocolate Chips as something that Imogen was supposed to bake but never did. In this post, I will give you the recipe and with what I thought about it. This recipe was also my first time baking a cake from scratch, and it was so much fun.

The Baroness’ thoughts about baking Imogen’s Poppy Seed Cake

Like I said up above this was my first time making a cake from scratch and it was a fun cake to do with my mom. Of course, my mom also took some pictures of me at certain times making this cake. I basically got the ingredients out for the cake and along with the page that had the instructions. I had my mixer all nice and ready and a separate bowl to put the dry ingredients in first before adding them into the mixer. It was a lot of fun and easy to do. Then I just followed the instructions that Erin Johnson gave, before putting it in the oven.

Imogen's Poppy Seed Cake Part 3The Baroness’ thoughts about doing the Glaze and topping it with flowers

The glaze part I kind of mess up, as I was just confused about when the recipe meant to put it on. After the cake comes out of the oven, you need to let it sit for around 20 minutes and during that time make the glaze. Once you complete the glaze and can flip the cake out, pour the glaze over the cake, and that’s it.

I didn’t get that part and just waited for it to cool down then started to pour some of it over it before ditching that and started to brush the glaze on. I ended up with some glaze left over and whenever we had the cake we just poured some more glaze over it. Either way, it works since the cake still was able to suck in the glaze. I didn’t have any of the flowers that were listed but I did get some edible flowers from the Farmer’s Market.

Imogen's Poppy Seed Cake Part 4The Baroness’ thoughts about the cake itself

After the cake was done, cooled, glazed, and decorated I had the first piece out of it. It was really good. The glaze was still all nice and good and I had some blueberries with it. Later that evening I had another piece, with the bit of glaze over it then was really amazing and I loved it. I wouldn’t mind making this cake again sometime.

Special thanks to Erin Johnson for this wonderful recipe. It has become a new family favorite.

Anyways I hope you liked this post,

Karen the Baroness
