A dead body in the parking lot of her family’s business, a killer on the loose, and a handsome detective asking a lot of questions…
Jamie Scott’s life fell apart four years ago when she broke off her engagement, turned down a dream job, and went overseas to run away from her life. Now she’s back, but the reunion is not without problems. She arrives home just in time to attend the soiree her mother planned, but she’s not prepared for what she finds—a dead employee in the parking lot.
Detective Nick Marshall is assigned to the murder case at the forensics lab owned by Jamie’s family. He meets the headstrong Jamie, but he has a job to do. And his attraction to her… well, he’s a professional.
Jamie knows the stakes are high. She has to face the past and save her parents’ business while dealing with her family drama and an uncertain future. She also has to deal with Nick, who wants her out of the way of his investigation. But fate keeps throwing them in one another’s paths… and into chaos that they both want to avoid, but neither can seem to escape.
Homecoming Chaos by D.W. Brooks is fantastic.
Will Jamie figure out who killed their employee before another issue comes to light?
Jamie Scott
Our heroine is Jamie Scott, a former model, daughter, and doctor. She is also inquisitive. Jamie has faced some tragedy in her life, but she now believes she has dealt with most of it and can move forward. Yet, now that she is back at home, things aren’t as different as she had hoped. If she isn’t careful and maintains her boundaries, she could fall back into her old ways. But I think she is too stubborn and smart to let that happen. Her father would like her to step into the family business to assist with an expansion. However, the death of an employee in the company parking lot becomes bad press, and now they need help dealing with that.
I like Jamie. She is one of the imperfect characters who strives to be herself. I like that she is beautiful and caring. Also, she takes initiative and tracks things down before the police have a chance to even go in that direction.
Nick Marshall
Nick is a detective with the Atlanta police department. He is really good at his job. He and his partner are good at balancing each other out. Nick is divorced with a daughter that he doesn’t see as much as he would like, but his job doesn’t always allow for that. However, Nick and his partner know something is off with this case; they can’t seem to catch a break until Jamie starts giving them clues. Not that they appreciate her butting into the case.
I like Nick. He and Jamie have an instant attraction, but fight it for the sake of the case. It’s funny that they both are trying to fight it. But they make a strikingly great couple.
Family dynamics
I love the way Ms. Brooks brings the whole family together and shows the love and the dysfunction. Truly, it is less dysfunction and more of a family trying to grow while dealing with what life throws at them.
Jamie’s parents are more complicated than the children see. But their love for their children is always there; it may have been controlling or absent at times, but their love is always there.
The siblings are more than their parents want for them. Each one has their issues and deals with them in different ways. However, in the end, they have each other’s backs. That is the best.
Four Stars
My rating for Homecoming Chaos by D.W. Brooks is four stars. I truly enjoyed this story, the mystery, the family dynamics, the romance, and the personal growth of the characters when they stopped to listen to each other. It is well written. I will be adding the first and third books to my TBR. I do highly recommend this story.
