Series: Callie Cassidy Mysteries #3

Author: Lori Roberts Herbst

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Pages: 275

Release Date: January 25, 2022

Summary:

A murder at the local hockey rink leaves photographer Callie Cassidy nursing a few injuries of her own, but that won’t stop her from trying to catch the killer—before someone else gets iced…

When hockey coach Renata Sanchez asks for Callie’s help exposing her ex-husband’s nefarious activities, Callie hesitates. After all, Renata’s brother, Detective Raul Sanchez, has been known to bristle at Callie’s interference. But with her own second-chance romance on rocky turf and her best friend’s engagement to a man Callie doesn’t entirely trust, she could use the distraction of an investigation.

Before she can even begin her research, a confrontation involving the ex, Renata, and Raul erupts right outside Sundance Studio. Then later in the day, the ex-husband literally drops dead and falls from the hockey arena catwalk—landing with a thud on top of Callie. Renata immediately takes the top spot on the suspect list, with Raul’s name not far behind. With time running out to save her friends, Callie enlists the help of her inquisitive cat and her loyal golden retriever to develop a picture of the true culprit.

Interview with Callahan “Callie” Cassidy

How did you and your author meet?

I sprang from her head, like Athena from Zeus. Just kidding, of course. That scenario portrays both of us as way more important than we are. Actually, Lori was a long-time journalism teacher, and in my former career as an investigative photojournalist, we crossed paths a time or two. I was even a guest speaker in her class once. We hit it off right away, and when she became an author, she naturally turned to me for inspiration.

Why did this writer decide to feature you in a book?

Well, with all humility, I am pretty interesting. But seriously, I think Lori enjoys exploring the transition I’m making, both physically and emotionally. Documenting my adjustment to quiet small-town life after so many years in the hustle and bustle of big city journalistic endeavors appeals to her training as a counselor. I admit, I contain a lot of psychological nooks and crannies worthy of exploration.

Do you have any friends or family helping you out?

Absolutely. My pets—a golden retriever named Woody and a tabby cat called Carl—have been instrumental in helping me solve a few crimes around here. My father Butch, the former police chief of Rock Creek Village, guides me through motives and means. Then there’s my friend Detective Raul Sanchez. Even though he’d tell you I’ve assisted him a few times, we all know it’s the other way around.

Do you have a regular job and investigate on the side or are you a full time detective?

I’m a professional photographer and owner of Sundance Studio, a photo gallery here in Rock Creek Village. Prior to that, I spent twenty-plus years as an investigative photojournalist. When my career ended—a story my author tells in book 1—I decided it was time for a big change. Little did I know I’d still be investigating—just in a different capacity.

What is the funniest thing that happens to you or another character in this story?

Probably the time when two young men stood outside my gallery window and frolicked around in an impromptu dance party. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, so that’s all I’ll say about that. You’ll just need to read it for yourself.

Have you solved other cases or is this your first one?

Oh, yes, I’ve solved several cases here in Rock Creek Village. You can read all about them in SUITABLE FOR FRAMING and DOUBLE EXPOSURE.

Do you have a gift or special talent?

Aside from my talent as a photographer, I’d say I’m gifted with tenacity. If something doesn’t seem right, I can’t let it go. My parents might question whether it’s a gift or a curse, since it gets me involved in situations that aren’t always prudent, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Who is the most important individual in your life?

You can’t make me choose just one! What if they all read this? So here’s my list: My mother and father, who are a constant source of support for me. Woody and Carl, my pets, who love me unconditionally (even though Carl wouldn’t admit it…) My lifelong friend, Tonya Stephens, who keeps the humor and fun in my life. And of course, my boyfriend Sam. He’s been my rock, even when I don’t properly express it.

What is your ideal vacation?

A month in Europe with my camera. I’d love to shoot pictures of all the amazing sights—ancient ruins, majestic cathedrals, stunning landscapes. Maybe someday…

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?

At this moment, I’m happy with where I am and what I do. The main things I’d change would be internal. I’d like to be more comfortable making myself vulnerable to others. I’ve been self-sufficient for so long that depending on friends and family doesn’t come naturally, but I want that—for them and for myself. Mostly, though, I’m pretty satisfied with this life. If only I could get people to quit committing crimes in my village…

Thank you for having me!
