Series Summary:
Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery, so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.
Diana is very much over her head and finds assistance from Matthew Clairmont, a centuries-old vampire and geneticist. Even though it is forbidden, Matthew and Diana find friendship and an attraction between each that can’t be denied. Now with their alliance formed, they must figure out the Book of Life’s mysteries and protect it from the Supernatural creatures who all want to claim it for themselves.

Hero & Heroine
Diana Bishop
Diana Bishop, a witch, historian, and professor at Yale studying alchemy and science at Oxford. She was orphaned early in life and raised by her Aunt Sarah and Emily. Diana hasn’t been interested in magic since her parents died, but now she must learn how to protect herself and embrace her destiny. Teresa Palmer plays her.
Teresa Palmer is an Australian actress and model best known for the movies Hacksaw Ridge and Warm Bodies. Most recently, she starred as Michelle Payne in Ride Like a Girl. This is her first television series. She is currently filming The Twin. Teresa also launched a health and wellness website called Your Zen Life with friend Phoebe Tonkin. Most recently, she has another site called Your Zen Mama, dealing with pregnancy, birth, and post-birth issues. This site is with her friend Sarah Wright Olsen. There is also a book, The Zen Mama Guide to Finding Your Rhythm in Pregnancy, Birth, and Beyond.
Matthew Clairmont
Matthew Clairmont, a vampire, geneticist, and Professor of Biochemistry at Oxford. He has lived for centuries and has had many lives, but now that he is with Diana, he will do anything to keep her safe. Including going against their world’s covenants. Matthew Goode plays him.
Matthew Goode is an English actor known for his roles in The Good Wife, Downtown Abbey, and The Crown, among only a few. Seriously, his list of credits is long. Look for him in The King’s Man as Captain Morton in December of 2021. As Simon in Silent Night in the UK later this year. He will also be King Sigismund in Medieval, which is currently in Post-production. Matthew is filming The Colour Room, but there aren’t many details released yet. Matthew doesn’t have social media accounts that I could find. He has been nominated for many awards, of which he has won Best Supporting Actor in the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards and Ensemble Cast Award in the Pals Springs International Film Festival.
Witches
Sarah Bishop
Sarah Bishop, Diana’s aunt and guardian. She resides at the Bishop’s old home in Madison, NY. Sarah is a powerful witch. Alex Kingston portrays Sarah.
Alex is an English actress known for ER (a medical drama), Doctor Who, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Arrow, and The Widow. She has been a long-time favorite of mine, and I think she fits the role of Sarah Bishop beautifully. She will be playing Harriet Weaver in James and Lucia. However, you’ll have to wait as it is only in pre-production.
Emily Mather
Emily Mather is Sarah’s partner. She is also a good friend of Rebecca Bishop, to who Rebecca told some of her secrets. Valarie Pettiford portrays her.
Valerie is an American stage and television actress, dancer, and jazz singer. She has been in numerous television roles such as Half & Half and True Blood and movies like Glitter and Stomp the Yard. You can still see her as Charleen Cooper on The Blacklist. Most recently, look for her in Senior Moment.
Peter Knox
Peter Knox, a member of the Congregation in the present time, was once obsessed with Diana’s mother, Rebecca. He is also power-hungry, uses dark magic, and is unscrupulous. Owen Teale portrays Peter Knox.
Owen is a Welsh actor best known for his role in the Game of Thrones, although he has been in numerous other shows. He is currently filming The Rig, a TV series, with Wisdom for Heroes and Save the Cinema, both in post-production.
Satu Järvinen
Satu Järvinen, a Finnish witch and a Congregation member in the present time. Satu knows that Diana is more than she seems, and she will do whatever is necessary to figure it out. Malin Buska plays satu.
Ms. Buska was born in Sweden and is known for being in The Girl King, Happy End, and The Lawyer.
Rebecca Bishop
Rebecca Bishop is Diana’s mother. She possesses strong power and is a gifted seer. She gives her life for her daughter. Sophia Myles plays Rebecca.
Ms. Myles is an English actress. She is most known for Tristan & Isolde, but you may recognize her from Transformers: Age of Extinction or Underworld. Look for her Disarm soon. And Decrypted and All That Glitters, which are in post-production.
Stephen Proctor
Stephen Proctor is Diana’s father, a time walker, and a weaver. He also gives his life for his daughter’s life. David Newman plays Stephen.
Mr. Newman, as an actor, is known for Victoria as Henry Cole. He was also in Endeavour and Deadtectives.
Sylvia Rattigan
Sylvia Rattigan, head of the Oxford Coven that works with Knox to catch Diana in the present time. Nila Aalia portrays her.
Ms. Aalia is an English actress who has been in films such as The Commuter, A Good Year, and the television series Years and Years.
Sigismund
Sigismund is the third Witch Congregation member in the present time. Ken Bones play him.
You might remember Mr. Bones in The World’s End, or more recently on the small screen in Versailles or Father Brown.
Susanna Norman
Susanna Norman, a midwife and the ancestor of Sophie Norman (Wilson) in 16th Century England. She makes sure that the chess piece passes through her family and gets to Diana in the future. Aisling Loftus portrays both Susanna and Sophie.
Ms. Loftus is an English actress best known for portraying Agnes Towler on the ITV series Mr. Selfridge and Sonya Rostova on the BBC historical drama series War & Peace. Look for her in Homebound, which is currently in post-production.
Goody Alsop
Goody Alsop, windwitch of St. James Garlickhythe in 16th Century England. Diana’s mentor, teacher, and friend. Sheila Hancock plays her.
Dame Sheila Cameron Hancock DBE is an English author and actress. She is most known for The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Take a Girl Like You, and Carry on Cleo. She recently starred in Delicious, but look for her in Unforgotten as Eileen Baildon. Ms. Hancock has been working in the film industry since the 1950s.
Catherine Streeter
Catherine Streeter, a firewitch in 16th Century England. She is one of the witches teaching Diana. Lois Chimimba plays Catherine.
Lois Chimimba is a Malawian-British actress. She is most known for her contributions to The One, Trust Me, and Doctor Who. You can look for her in Vigil and Beep. She will also be part of The Offenders TV series.
Elizabeth Jackson
Elizabeth Jackson, a waterwitch in 16th Century England. She is one of the witches teaching Diana. Victoria Yeates plays Elizabeth.
Victoria Yeates is an English actress best know for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Call of the Midwife. Look for her in the next installment of Fantastic Beasts.
Marjorie Cooper
Marjorie Cooper, earthwitch in 16th Century England. She is one of the witches teaching Diana. Amy McAllister plays Marjorie.
Amy McAllister is an Irish actress best known for her work in Philomena, The Man on Her Mind, and Call the Midwife. She is also in There She Goes and Miss Scarlet and the Duke.
Andre Champier
Andre Champier, a wizard of Lyon. He arrives at Sept-Tours looking for Diana. Champier is played by Paul Brennen. This character is deceased.
Paul Brennen is an actor best known for Alien 3, Men in Black: International, and Rag Nymph. Look for him in The One as David Cooper in 2021.
Tom Caldwell
Tom Caldwell, prisoner of Cecil’s in 16th Century England. He is held for witchcraft. Louis Maskell plays Tom.
Louis Maskell is an actor who has appeared in Rellik, Atlantis, and Endeavor. He is also a well-accomplished theatre actor who has been in Doctor Faustus, Flowers for Mrs. Harris, The Grinning Man, and Fiddler on the Roof.
Gillian Chamberlain
Gillian Chamberlain is an academic at Oxford. She is more involved in the supernatural world but lacks any actual power. She pretends to be Diana’s friend in the modern time but is jealous and uses Diana to further her own wishes. Louise Brealey plays Gillian. This character is deceased.
Louise is an English actress, writer, and journalist. She is known mostly being Molly Harper in Sherlock. She has been in other productions, and she has also written scripts and for various magazines. You might have seen her as Cass on Back, a TV series, or on Exile (TV series) as Sarah Hargraves.
Meridiana
Meridiana, a witch, was enslaved for centuries by Gerbert. She tells the prophecy about the end of the children of the night in the present day. Chloe Dumas portrays her. This character is deceased.
Ms. Dumas was born in France and speaks English, French, and Spanish. She specializes in acting as an English person with a foreign accent. You might remember her from Paris Connections or Dracula Reborn.
Young Diana Bishop
Young Diana Bishop. Elle Shenker portrays her.
Elle Shenker is an actress and musical artist best know for her roles in Brimstone and Les Misérables: The Staged Concert.
Vampires
Ysabeau de Clermont
Ysabeau de Clermont, mother of Matthew Clairmont and wife/mate of Philippe de Clermont. She is known for killing witches in South America after World War II. She resides at Sept-Tours in France. She is a formidable character, with class and elegance. Lindsay Duncan portrays Ysabeau.
Lindsey is a Scottish actress who has been in lots of films and television shows, such as Birdman, About Time, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Alice in Wonderland, and many more. Yet, I remember her most from Under the Tuscan Sun. Look for her in A Banquet which is currently in post-production.
Philippe de Clermont
Philippe de Clermont, head of the de Clermont family, lord of Sept-Tours, and founder of Knights of Lazarus, and one of the Congregation’s founding members. He is the mate of Ysabeau. Philippe is a force to be reckoned with. James Purefoy portrays him.
James Purefoy is an English actor known for his roles in Rome, The Following, and Altered Carbon. Currently, you may watch him in his role of Captain Gulliver Troy in Pennyworth.
Marcus Whitmore
Marcus Whitmore, Matthew Clairmont’s vampire son, lab colleague, and a doctor. Marcus was turned during the American Revolution. Edward Bluemel plays him.
Mr. Bluemel is an English actor. He is best know for his roles in The Commuter, The Halcyon, and he played Hugo in Killing Eve.
Baldwin Montclair
Baldwin Montclair, vampire son of Phillippe de Clermont. He is an investment banker and in charge of the Congregation presently. Baldwin is from the Roman Empire. He comes across as bossy, uptight sort, but he really is loyal to his family. Trystan Gravelle plays Baldwin in the first and second seasons.
Mr. Gravelle is from Wales. As an actor, he has been in Anonymous, Utopia, and Beast. He is currently filming The Lord of Rings TV series.
Gallowglass
Gallowglass is the son of Hugh De Clermont, soldier of fortune, Gael, and appointed protector of Diana’s. He and Matthew are both close in the 16th Century. However, in the present time, Gallowglass disappears a lot. Steven Cree plays gallowglass.
Steven Cree is a Scottish actor best known for his roles in Outlaw King, Brave, and Outlander. Look for him in Martyrs Lane, which is in post-production, and The Twin, which he is filming currently.
Miriam Shephard
Miriam Shephard, Matthew’s longtime trusted friend and present-day scientific colleague in Oxford. Miriam is a straightforward vampire with style and great organization skills. Aiysha Hart plays her.
Ms. Hart is a British-Saudi screen and stage actress. She is best known for her roles in Colette, Line of Duty, Mogul Mowgli, Honour, and Hope Gap. She speaks fluent Arabic and English.
Gerbert D’Aurilac
Gerbert D’Aurilac, a former pope and a present-day Congregation member. He isn’t troubled by enslaving witches, daemons, or other vampires. He immensely dislikes de Clermont family. Gerbert is ruthless and sneaky. He is played by Trevor Eve.
Trevor is well-known in the acting world, most recently for Waking the Dead. He has played in so many other series. He is also the father of actress Alice Eve.
Domenico Michele
Domenico Michele, Congregation member in the present time and the historic 35th Doge of Venice. Domenico doesn’t have the power or the money that Gerbert or the De Clermonts have. Gerbert took Venice from him, and yet, Domenico continues to try to earn Gerbert’s favor. Gregg Chillin portrays Domenico.
Mr. Chillin was born in the UK and as an actor has been in Being Human, A Good Year, and Da Vinci’s Daemons. Look for him currently in The One TV series.
Father Andrew Hubbard
Father Andrew Hubbard, the vampire king of London. Father Hubbard has a large flock of vampires, witches, daemons, and humans. He has a strange way of doing it, but his idea of mutual respect is before it’s time. There is more to Father Hubbard than we know. Paul Rhys portrays Hubbard.
Paul Rhys is a Welsh actor best known for the role Sydney Chaplin in Chaplin. You may have seen him in Victoria or as Vlad the Impaler on Da Vinci’s Demons.
Benjamin
Benjamin, Herr Fuchs, Matthew’s disowned son. Jacob Ifan plays him.
Jacob Ifan is a Welsh actor who graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He is best known for his role in Cuffs as Jake Vickers. You might remember him in I’ll Find You. It looks like he might be filming a new TV series SAS: Rogue Heroes.
Marthe
Marthe, a friend of De Clermonts and part of Sept Torres household in the present. Marthe goes where Ysabeau goes for the most part. Sorcha Cusack portrays her.
Ms. Cusack is an Irish actress best known for being in Snatch, Jane Eyre, and Father Brown, the TV series.
Pierre
Pierre, servant to Matthew in the 16th Century. He is truly loyal to Matthew and the De Clermonts. Milo Twomey plays Pierre.
Milo Twomey is an English actor. He is best known for his roles in My Spy Family, Band of Brothers, and Silent Witness.
Francoise
Francoise, servant to Matthew in the 16th Century. She takes over dressing Diana, caring for Jack, and handling the household. Holly Aird portrays Francoise.
Holly Aird is an English actress best know for her role of Forensic Pathologist Frankie Wharton in Waking the Dead. More recently, she has appeared in Unforgotten, and she completed Silent Night.
Louisa De Clermont
Louisa De Clermont, sister of Matthew, is infected with blood rage. She has a very demented mind. Elaine Cassidy plays Louisa. This character is deceased.
Elaine Cassidy is an Irish actress. She is known for her role of Abby Mills in Harper’s Island. You might also have seen her in Acceptable Risk, No Offense, or The Dark Tower. It’s rumored she may be in Blue Guitar in the future.
Juliette Durand
Juliette Durand, the vampire daughter of Gerbert who is in love with Matthew in modern time. She is insane, and Gerbert uses her as a weapon. Elarica Johnson portrays Juliette. This character is deceased.
Ms. Johnson is an English actress and model. Elarica was a waitress in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and you may have also seen her in My Brother the Devil and Blade Runner 2049. Look for her in Sexual Healing in the role of Janis Gaye (she is credited as Elarica Gallacher).
Daemons
Agatha Wilson
Agatha Wilson is a Congregation member in the present and mother of Nathanial, grandmother of Margaret. Tanya Moodie portrays her.
Tanya is a Canadian-born British actress best known for Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. She is also known in the UK for Sherlock, Royal Shakespeare Company: Hamlet, and Prime Suspect 6: The Last Witness. More recently, you may remember her in Absentia, Motherland, or Tin Star.
Hamish Osborne
Hamish Osborne is a financial genius who brokers deals to save the human financial markets and close friend of Matthew. He is also in control of the Knights of Lazarus and the Clermonts numerous holdings and funds in the present. Greg McHugh portrays Hamish.
Greg McHugh is a Scottish actor and writer. You may remember Greg for his role in Fresh Meat or Gary: Tank Commander, in which he is also the creator, writer, and star. Most recently, you might have seen him on The A Word TV series.
Sophie Norman
Sophie Norman is the wife of Nathaniel, Margaret’s mother, and born of witches in the present time. Sophie brings Diana a chess piece that helps her and Matthew travel to the past. You may also notice that Sophie looks just like Susanna Norman, her ancestor, as they are both portrayed by Aisling Loftus.
Ms. Loftus is an English actress. She was in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, also the BBC’s War and Peace, along with the Borrowers.
Nathaniel Wilson
Nathaniel Wilson, husband of Sophie, father of a young witch Margaret, son of Agatha Wilson (Congregation Member), computer whiz, and activist for daemons. He is also one of the newest Knights of Lazerus, and he is helping Marcus with a “rebrand” of the Knights. He is in the present. Daniel Ezra plays Nathaniel.
Mr. Ezra, a British actor, best known as Spense James, the star of All American, but you may remember him from Undercover or The Missing on Starz.
Osamu
Osamu is a Congregation Member in the present time. Leo Ashizawa portrays him.
Leo Ashizawa is an actor and model. He is an educated archaeologist but prefers theatre work. You may have seen him in All That Remains or Breaking the Bank. He’s a member of a London-based theatre and performance collective, The Washing Machine. Mr. Ashizawa is currently filming Citadel, a TV mini-series.
Timur
Timur is the third Daemon Congregation Member in the present time. Julian Kostov plays him.
Mr. Kostov is a Bulgarian actor, filmmaker, and former professional swimmer. You may have seen him recently in Shadow and Bone, Temple, or Treadston. He also starred and produced Berlin Station, but perhaps you saw his role in Another Mother’s Son.
Christopher “Kit” Marlowe
Christopher “Kit” Marlowe is a playwright from 16th Century England. One of Matthew’s friends and a member of the School of Night. Kit is obsessed with Matthew and hates Diana. Tom Hughes plays him.
Tom Hughes is an English actor. He is best known for his role of Prince Albert in Victoria and his role in The Game. Although, you should watch for him in The Laureate sometime soon. Also, watch for Infinite and Shephard, which are in post-production. It was also announced recently that he would star in Corto Maltese.
Edward Kelley
Edward Kelley is an alchemist trying to make the philosopher’s stone. He has possession of the book of life. Kelley is currently working for Emperor Rudolf but was working for Queen Elizabeth. Tom Mothersdale portrays him.
Tom Mothersdale is a British actor best known for his role in the TV series Peaky Blinders and Treadstone. Perhaps you remember him in Overlord.
Humans (worth mentioning)
Phoebe Taylor
Phoebe Taylor is an Art Historian who works for a London auction house in the present time. She and Marcus start a relationship. I truly like this couple as they are so cute together and seem to complement each other well. Adelle Leonce portrays phoebe.
Adelle Leonce is a British actress and model. She is best known for her roles in Black Mirror, C.B. Strike, Death in Paradise, and Roadkill. Look for her in Do This for Me, which is in post-production.
Sean
Sean, who works at the Bodleian Library and is a friend of Diana. Adetomiwa Edun portrays him.
Mr. Edun is an actor from Nigeria, and he is most known for his roles in What Happened to Monday, Cinderella, and Bates Motel. I remember him from his role as Akello Ankeny on Elementary.
Sir Walter Raleigh
Sir Walter Raleigh, an adventurer, member of Queen Elizabeth’s court, part of the School of Night, and Matthew’s friend in the 16th Century. Michael Lindall plays Raleigh.
Michael Lindall is an actor best known for his Deep State, Roadside Picnic, and The Interceptor roles.
Henry Percy
Henry Percy, the Earl of Northumberland in 16th Century England, a member of Queen Elizabeth’s Court and the School of Night. He is also a good friend to Matthew and then Diana. Adam Sklar plays Henry.
Adam Sklar is a British actor, director, and writer. He doesn’t have many acting credits to his name, but he is the director, writer, and voice on the videogame Faceless.
Jack Blackfriars
Jack Blackfriars is a young orphan boy that Diana and Matthew adopt in 16th Century London. He is plagued by nightmares and is good at picking pockets. Joshua Blue Pickering plays Jack.
Joshua Blue Pickering is a young English actor very new to the industry but working hard to make a go of it. Look for him as John Darling in Peter Pan & Wendy coming in 2022.
William Cecil
William Cecil, Lord Burghley, the lord high treasurer of 16th Century England. He is tough and will use any means necessary to get the confession required (whether true or not). Adrian Rawlins plays Cecil.
Adrian Rawlins is an English actor best know for his role of James Potter in the Harry Potter series. Look for him the TV mini-series Grace and Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse as the Chief of Staff sometime this year.
Mary Sidney
Mary Sidney, the Countess of Pembroke and an alchemist. She befriends Matthew and Diana in 16th Century England. Mary knows about creatures but likes to deny their existence to protect herself. Amanda Hale portrays her.
Amanda Hale is a British actress best known for her role in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. You might remember her from the TV series Catastrophe as Catherine or perhaps as Lady Margaret Beaufort in The White Queen, a TV mini-series. Look for her in Pragma, a short in post-production out soon.
Elizabeth I
Elizabeth I, Queen of England in 16th Century England. Matthew is a member of her court and a close friend of hers. Barbara Marten portrays Queen Elizabeth.
Barbara Marten is a British actress. She is best known for her roles in The Turning, Hamlet, A Passionate Woman, and Sanctuary. Did you see her in Angela Black, the TV series as Sally recently? Look for her in the short Her Majesty, which is currently in post-production.
Rudolph II
Rudolph II, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia in the 16th Century. Rudolph has a crush on Diana. He is also aware that Diana is a witch and Matthew is a vampire. Rudolph is a collector of precious things. Michael Jibson plays him.
Michael Jibson is an Olivier award-winning English actor, voice-over artist, writer, and director. He is best known for his roles in Les Misérables, Beauty and the Beast, 1917, and Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. Look for him in: To Olivia, and a short Broken Shelter. Also, watch for Michael as a detective in Last Night in Soho and The Barking Murders as DC Slaymaker. Both of these are in post-production.
Peckham
Peckham, messenger, and minion of William Cecil’s in 16th Century England. Tom Lewis portrays him.
Tom Lewis is a British actor best known for his roles in Gentleman Jack and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Look for him in Redeeming Love, which should be out sometime this year.
Matthieu Beny
Matthieu Beny, a young man out enjoying the evening until he meets Juliette Durand. Freddie Thorp plays him.
Freddie Thorp is a British actor best know for his role in Override. You might have seen him in Safe on Netflix or Fate: The Winx Saga, which is also a TV series. Watch for him in Summit Fever which is currently in pre-production.
Head of Faculty
The Head of Faculty at Oxford likes Diana and would like her to come work at Oxford. Sadie Shimmin plays her.
Ms. Shimmin is best known for Wallander, but you might remember her from Mr. Selfridge or Call the Midwife. She was also on EastEnders, the TV series.
Dr. John Dee
Dr. John Dee, a learned man with an extensive library in the 16th Century. At one time, he had the Book of Life, yet Edward Kelley stole the book from him. Struan Rodger plays Dr. Dee.
Struan Rodger is a British actor best known for his roles in Kill List, Chariots of Fire, Stardust, along with Four Weddings and a Funeral. He has also appeared in a wide range of supporting actor roles.
Rabbi Judah Loew
Rabbi Judah Loew, a wise man who can read many old languages in the 16th Century. Diana and Matthew visit him in the 16th Century to learn more about The Book of Life and a witch in Bohemia. Anton Lesser portrays Rabbi Loew.
Anton Lesser is an English actor who has played many of the principal Shakespearian roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He is best known for his roles in the TV series Game of Thrones as Qyburn, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Disobedience, and Miss Potter.
Master William Pole
Master William Pole, part of Matthew’s spy team. Simon Meacock plays Pole.
Simon Meacock is an English actor best know for his roles in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Pirates of the Caribean: Dead Man’s Chest, and Outlander. Look for him in Whitstable Pearl, a TV series in the role of Ralphio.
