Series Summary:
Shadowhunters, also known as Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, is an American supernatural drama television series developed by Ed Decter, based on the popular book series The Mortal Instruments written by Cassandra Clare. It premiered in North America on Freeform on January 12, 2016. Primarily filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the series follows Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara), who finds out on her eighteenth birthday that she is not who she thinks she is, but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters, human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons.
It is the second adaptation of the novel series, after the 2013 film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which like the series was produced by Constantin Film. The debut season of Shadowhunters has received mixed responses from critics. The pilot episode attracted the largest audience for Freeform in more than two years. The show has received numerous award nominations, winning one GLAAD Award and four Teen Choice Awards.
In March 2016, the series was renewed for a second season of 20 episodes, which premiered on January 2, 2017. In August 2016, showrunner Ed Decter exited the series over “creative differences”. Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer were named as Decter’s replacements. In April 2017, Freeform renewed the show for a third season of 20 episodes, which premiered on March 20, 2018. In June 2018, Freeform canceled the series after three seasons, but ordered two extra episodes to properly conclude the series’ story; the second half of the third season is set to premiere on February 25, 2019, with 12 episodes ordered. Cast:
Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray/Clarissa Fairchild Morgenstern:
Clary Fray/Clarissa Fairchild Morgenstern is played by Katherine McNamara. I believe another excellent choice for this part as Katherine McNamara to me, is Clary Fray. She has long red hair that has ringlets in it. That is not like the curls that Clary is supposed to have, but I don’t care. She has green eyes to match as well. Yes, Katherine had to use hair dye, but she is originally a redhead. She had to died it blonde for another role before being cast as Clary. So she had to do that to her hair. Clary is the most prominent character in the series. Katherine McNamara did an outstanding job of bringing Clary to life. Katherine McNamara was recently in both Happyland (2014), The Fosters (2015), and The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015).
Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland:
Jace Wayland is played by Dominic Sherwood. I believe that Dominic is an excellent choice for Jace. He is very hot and is a great person for the role. His eyes are two different colors. It still doesn’t matter in my mind as he is a pretty awesome Jace. He is also a little bit better than Jamie Campbell Bower from the movie. I am not dissing the film as both of them are entirely different and are both excellent in their ways. This Jace is a better, cockier, and sassier version of Jace, which is always a good thing. Dominic Sherwood was recently in Vampire Academy (2014).
Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood:
Isabelle Lightwood is played by Emeraude Toubia. Emeraude is Isabelle in my head. Isabelle is the person that yes is a girl, but she doesn’t want to stay at home to take care of the household but be there in the fight while still looking sexy as she does it. Emeraude shows that greatly while also still caring for her family and Jace. Isabelle is one of those characters that no one thinks that much of, but I do.
I mean, Isabelle is one of those characters that is comfortable in her skin and wears whatever outfit she feels like wearing out for the night or to fight in. Like when she wears that white leather halter top and white leather mini skirt because she has the confidence to carry it off. As for the outfit and the controversy around it, we need to think about this time frame, and this outfit is most definitely something that a teenager now would wear. Emeraude Toubia was recently in Tattooed Love (2015) and other things in her native language.
Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood:
Alec Lightwood is played by Matthew Daddario. Okay, I believe that I am going to say this about all the cast members that I talk about, but this is another excellent choice for Alec. Granted, yes, I know that Alec is supposed to have blue eyes, and Matthew has brown eyes. To me is like everyone talking about how Daniel Radcliffe from Harry Potter doesn’t have green eyes but blue eyes instead. To me, that is just a small detail that can be overlooked. Matthew is definitely an excellent choice for Alec, and I am happy that they went with him. I enjoyed his portrayal of the character in the pilot episode. Matthew Daddario was recently in Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List (2015).
Alberto Rosende as Simon Lewis:
Simon Lewis is played by Alberto Rosende. Alberto is a convincing Simon, and I think that he will be great for both the nerd part of Simon’s personality and when he is a vampire. Simon is Clary’s best friend, and he loves her as more than a friend, but of course, Clary doesn’t see him in that way, which is pretty much awful for him. Simon is a great guy, and anyone would be happy to have as a friend. Alberto Rosende was recently in Blue Bloods (2015).
Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway:
Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway, is an excellent choice for the character. He is a different character almost all the way through, but Luke is still the father figure that Clary needed throughout the series. Isaiah Mustafa was an American football player before playing the Old Spice Guy in some commercials.
Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus Bane:
Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus Bane, in my opinion, was an excellent choice. Harry brings that unique Magnus touch to the character that I am happy to see. Magnus is a unique character, and I love how they did his magic part. I missed seeing his cat eyes, but he is a different character sort of from when he was in the books as well. Harry Shum Jr was most recently on Glee (2009-2015).
Alisha Wainwright as Maia Roberts:
Alisha Wainwright, as Maia Roberts, is an excellent cast. I liked what she brought to the character to make Maia her own. Alisha Wainwright has recently been in somethings that I hadn’t seen recently before she was cast as Maia.
Jade Hassoune as Meilorn:
Jade Hassoune as The Seelie, Meilorn, and I have got to say that I am impressed with who they chose for him. Mr. Hassoune is a great actor for this fairy. The only thing that I have seen Jade Hassoune in was Heartland (2013-2014) as Prince Ahmed Al Saeed.
David Castro as Raphael Santiago:
David Castro as Raphael Santiago, a vampire. He was the second in command then the head vamp. Mr. Castro did a fantastic job as Raphael, and I believed it for every scene that he was in. The roles that I have seen David in is a 2008 film 27 Dresses as Pedro, and in 2016 while he was doing Shadowhunters in Blue Bloods as Louis Edwards in an episode called The Greater Good.
Kaitlyn Leeb as Camille Belcourt:
Kaitlyn Leeb as the head vampire Camille Belcourt. I love the actress that they chose for her and how she portrayed the character. Ms. Leeb did an excellent job on her, and I loved the whole look that they gave her. The only show that I saw Ms. Leeb in before Shadowhunters was Heartland (2012-2017) as Cassandra Lee Odell.
Alan Van Sprang as Valentine Morgenstern:
Alan Van Sprang, as Valentine Morgenstern, is another excellent choice for this character. I love the way that Alan Van Sprang portrayed the character. Mr. Van Sprang makes a great villain choice. Before seeing him on this show, the only thing I have seen him in is Reign as King Henry. Valentine is in evil dude, and I got that just by watching Alan even if it was scenes where he wasn’t that evil.
Maxim Roy as Jocelyn Fray:
Maxim Roy, as Jocelyn Fray, is an okay choice for her. She does excellent as Katherine McNamara’s TV mom. I haven’t seen Ms. Roy in anything before or after Shadowhunters. She is a great actress, and I missed seeing her on the show.
Nicola Correia-Damude as Maryse Lightwood:
Nicola Correia-Damude, as Maryse Lightwood, is another great actress for a character. From the little bit that we have seen of Mrs. Lightwood in the show, I have to say that I liked her. I loved the way that Nicola portrayed Maryse and the way that she evolved throughout the show. I haven’t seen Ms. Correia-Damude in anything before or after Shadowhunters.
Will Tudor as Jonathan Morgenstern/Sebastian Verlac
Will Tudor as Jonathan Morgenstern/Sebastian Verlac is an excellent choice. He has this look to him that you wouldn’t think oh he’s an evil guy. I loved how he portrayed these two characters as it is a different take then I thought it would be, but that is coming from a person that hasn’t read the books in a while. The only thing that I saw Will Tudor in before Shadowhunters is a film in the year 2014 called Vampire Academy as a Senior Novice.
Luke Baines as Jonathan Morgenstern:
Luke Baines, as Jonathan Morgenstern, is the most perfect choice for this evil demonic Shadowhunter. Mr. Baines is a great actor, and playing this character proved it. Jonathan is a very complex character when he is around other people to be with his sister, Clary. I think that he has done a great job. Prior to his role as Jonathan, I haven’t seen him in anything.
Anna Hopkins as Lilith:
Anna Hopkins, as Lilith is a great choice. I haven’t seen Ms. Hopkins before her role as Lilith. Lilith is such an evil character, but Ms. Hopkins has done such a great job of being her. The only role I have seen Anna Hopkins in while she was playing Lilith was The Expanse (2018) as Monica Stuart.
Jon Cor as Hodge Starkweather:
Jon Cor, as Hodge Starkweather was a pretty big significant jump from the guy I pictured in my head. I pictured Hodge Starkweather as an old guy in his mid-forties, so this is a vast improvement. I haven’t really seen him in anything really before Shadowhunters. After Shadowhunters, though, I have seen him in three things since then. The first thing was in 2017 Supernatural as a Wraith in an episode called Patience, in 2019 Picture Perfect Mysteries: Newlywed and Dead as Greg Adams, the husband, and in 2019 Picture A Perfect Christmas as David the main male character.
Paulino Nunes as Robert Lightwood:
Paulino Nunes, as Robert Lightwood, is a fantastic actor playing this not so fantastic father. He has played on several other shows before coming on Shadowhunters. Robert did great with playing a parent that isn’t really there for his kids all that much. Changing the Lightwoods from being a Caucasian family to a Latin one was pretty smart and that they did a great job.
Stephanie Bennett as Lydia Branwell:
Stephanie Bennett, as Lydia Branwell, was great. I loved this character, and I did feel bad when things didn’t work out well for her and Alec. Stephanie, as an actress, is great; she has played in several things that I have watched. She was in Descendants as Snow White, Aurora Teegarden Mysteries: The Julius House as Charity Julius, which she was filming Shadowhunters while doing this role, and Valentine in the Vineyard as Shay Michaels. Jack Fulton as Max Lightwood:
Jack Fulton, as Max Lightwood was a great choice since he is great as Max. I loved that they had him stay alive instead of dying like what happened in the book series. This is the only thing that I have seen Mr. Fulton in which is fine. He did a great job and I know that he will be even better in the future.
Lola Flanery as Seelie Queen Amara (child):
Lola Flanery as the child version of Seelie Queen Amara and like with Jack this is the only role that I have seen her in. Ms. Flanery did a great job with this role and she is an actress that will be on my radar for other roles. She has done a great job bringing a childlike quality to the Seelie Queen.
Sarah Hyland as Seelie Queen Amara (teenager):
Sarah Hyland as the teenage version of Seelie Queen Amara for two episodes did a great job. She was dating Dominic Sherwood at the time of filming these episodes. She has a lot of acting credits. One of the things that most people recognize her in is Modern Family as Haley Dunphy or for more book fans she was in Vampire Academy as Natalie. Ms. Hyland is a great actress and she takes her craft seriously which anyone can see in the two episodes that she was in. To see Sarah Hyland’s episodes they are from Season 2 Episode 19 and 20.
Kimberly-Sue Murray as Seelie Queen Amara (adult):
Kimberly-Sue Murray as the adult version of Seelie Queen Amara and she did a great job as well. I think the three different versions of the Seelie Queen all did a fantastic job on a role that is very different for the three versions that they played. Ms. Murray has done a lot of different roles but none that I really have seen.
