Nancy Norman's world collapses when a fire destroys everything she owns. The glamour-obsessed home care nurse faces an impossible choice: retire with nothing-or take one last night shift that could change everything. She takes the job.

Her assignment leads her to an eccentric billionaire's remote estate, where eco-activism hides darker secrets. But her quiet shift erupts into chaos when thieves storm the mansion, hunting for a legendary sapphire collection. Suddenly, Nancy is fighting for her life against trained criminals, high-tech traps, and the mansion's bizarre defenses.

Caught between loyalty and desperation, Nancy discovers an unexpected talent for deception. As she matches wits with the charming mastermind Stephen Sinclair, she realizes the biggest heist of the night might be her own transformation. In a house where nothing is what it seems, Nancy must decide who she is-and what she's willing to steal to survive. This glittering thriller delivers a night of crime, betrayal, and self-discovery where the real treasure might be finding yourself.

The Night Nurse and the Jewel Thief by Marilee Dahlman is an inspiring read.

Will Nancy find herself and make it through the night?

Our main character, Nancy Norman, is in a bit of a rut. She is recently divorced, her home burned down, and she has to retire. The only constant at present is her beloved cat, who saved her and her neighbors when a wildfire tore through their neighborhood. Nancy has been a home health nurse for a long time, but she doesn’t have much in savings. Her favorite pastimes are watching James Bond movies and bedazzling.

I enjoyed reading about Nancy and everything she went through; that one night truly taught her to believe in herself. She spent a lifetime taking care of people, and no one ever took care of her. Nancy even had to cover for her father in the end. But now Nancy has more confidence, and she has learned to see opportunities where she once saw none.

The Billionaire

The Night Nurse and the Jewel Thief CRIn a last minute effort to get ahead, Nancy takes a one night nursing job with the billionaire Gnut Berdqvist. How hard can it be? All she has to do is take the patient’s vitals and check on him every four hours. He doesn’t move; he is just sleeping. But is he? Perhaps Nancy has watched too many James Bond movies?

Gnut Berdqvist is supposed to have created this device to help with global warming, and he has set it up at his mansion in Minnesota. Where it is now winter in the middle of August. Gnut likes to keep everything cold, and he has a strange fascination with everything involving deep sea diving. His house has aquariums everywhere, with strange fish and sapphires as the decorations. It is so over the top.

Four Stars

My rating for The Night Nurse and the Jewel Thief by Marilee Dahlman is four stars. I enjoyed the story and, most importantly, the way Nancy evolves. Also, I like a happy ending, and this one is well done. I do recommend it.

About Marilee Dahlman

Marilee Dahlman

Marilee is a fiction writer whose work celebrates reinvention, resilience, and the unexpected adventures that arrive when life upends itself. Her debut novel introduces readers to Nancy Norman — a 65-year-old retired nurse whose quiet life is shattered by a house fire, launching her into a world of an eccentric billionaire, glittering jewels, and one very debonair thief.

She writes with warmth, wit, and fierce affection for characters the literary world has too often overlooked: older women who are still hungry for adventure. Her fiction blends comedy, caper, climate, and heart — and always, somewhere nearby, a cat.

Marilee lives with her cats Pearl and Wilma, whose Persian predecessor Cosmo inspired the beloved Dr. GoldenPaw.
