The year is 1853 in a steampunk Boston, Mass, and Professor Augustus Goodsteam has a problem. To win a contract to supply the government with airship engines, Professor Goodsteam must prove the engine works by circumnavigating the globe. His competitor managed to do it in 61 days. Can the professor complete the voyage in less time? Stormy weather is just the beginning of his troubles! Pirates, earthquakes, and even wars interfere with the trip. But with help from his loyal crew of three people and a cat, the professor just might make it. Might.

The Perilous Voyage by Michael Wegner is about Professor Goodsteam going on a trip around the world in less than 60 days.

Can Professor Goodsteam make the trip?

Professor Goodsteam

Professor Augustus Goodsteam is our protagonist, along with his crew. He owns a business that creates engines for airstreams. Professor Goodsteam tries his hardest not to make anything difficult for other people, especially those in his employment at his garage. He is a bit of a weird character. If I were to see him on the street, I would probably go to the other side.

The Adventure

Professor Goodsteam learns that another person made the trip in 61 days and might be earning the government commission. Well, unless Goodsteam and company can do it faster. I was fascinated by the prospect of the adventure part from the plot summary, and it was okay. Sadly, I thought that it went by too fast.

Three Stars

My rating for The Perilous Voyage by Michael Wegner is three stars. I wanted to like it but I was having a hard time connecting to the characters. Not only that but I felt like the author glazed over the adventure part of the book. The author also took a bit to get to the adventure part. I also felt like he glazed over the characters relationships and even more that he glazed over Professor Goodsteam’s team. I really wanted to like the book but it just wasn’t working out for me.
