Get ready for some spooky fun in the first installment of this all-new middle grade series from author Steve Behling, featuring side-splitting illustrations throughout by Robb Mommaerts!

Wen Wyler (aka Waffles) is 11 years old and is forced to spend the summer in Maine with his grandpa, a former Hollywood make-up and special effects artist for classic horror films. Ever seen THE BEAST WITH A THOUSAND TOES, GLAARG! Or its sequel GLAARG! AGAIN!? If so, then you might be familiar with his work.

Wen, a horror movie aficionado, is persuaded to go when he finds out that part of the summer will be spent helping his Grandpa sort through and organize his basement filled with props. Grandpa's young neighbor, Tanya, has already been corralled into helping and together they dig in until Wen accidentally brings one of the props to life.

Mummy Man is a good guy, but the other creatures AREN'T so good. It's up to Wen, Tanya, and Mummy Man (and his pet turtle, Frank) to stop the creatures from turning the town into the nexus for an all-out monster invasion.

The Monstrous Adventures of Mummy Man and Waffles by Steve Behling features a young boy going to his grandpa’s house for the summer to help him in his basement.

Can Wen Wyler save the town with the help of Tanya, Mummy Man, and Frank the Turtle?

Wen and the gang

Wen Wyler, also known as Waffles, thanks to his mom, is heading off to Shriekport to help his grandpa in his basement. He didn’t initially like this idea, but once he found out that his grandpa had all of his old movie props down there, that changed his tune. Waffles is getting the summer he didn’t know he needed until he got it. I sort of like Waffles. He is definitely an odd duck, but I’m glad to see a kid wanting to spend time with his grandpa instead of being dumped there, whether he wanted to or not.

Tanya is Waffles’s age and loves horror movies just as much as he does. She is already helping out Waffles’ grandpa during the summer and doesn’t mind the help that Waffles brings. I like Tanya because she doesn’t put up with Waffles’ bellyaching about having to do certain things.

Mummy Man is a prop of Grandpa’s that came to life because purple slime accidentally entered the basement water. He is a fantastic character because he has so much humor, and I laughed a lot during his scenes. Mummy Man found Frank in the river near the town and decided to take him along. He can also hear Frank talk.

The Story

Waffles is up in Maine, helping his grandpa catalog all his old movie props in his flooded basement. Well, that is until the props come to life, and some want to terrorize the town and then take over the world! I must say that I loved every minute of this book despite some images creeping me out. Clown Vampire is all I’m going to say about it.

Five Stars

My rating for The Monstrous Adventures of Mummy Man and Waffles by Steve Behling is five stars. I recommend it to anyone who wants a good laugh while being a bit scared by some creepy monsters that have come to life. Mr. Behling has done a fantastic job of bringing this story to life while leaving it open for a sequel.
