Summary:
It’s October and Mother Nature has painted photographer Robyn Cavanagh’s suburban New York hometown in rich colors of red, orange, and gold. Autumn has provided many scenic locales to shoot, but Robyn is happily preoccupied with one particular landscape. She’s landed the biggest job of her flourishing career: a contract to photograph the lush Linden Acres farm.
Her work begins with sunshine-filled days of apple and pumpkin picking and starry nights featuring a spectacular display of glowing jack-o’-lanterns. The merry mood darkens after Robyn discovers the body of Doug Paxton, the estranged husband of a member of the Linden clan.
Robyn can’t look through her camera’s viewfinder without picturing Doug’s body in the Linden pumpkin patch. Along with her friend Will Vonderlin, she plays detective to solve Doug’s murder. Will the killer be caught before the apples and pumpkins are turned into Thanksgiving pies, or will Robyn lose her best client and watch her career fade along with the autumn colors?

Excerpt
`The tranquility I felt on Saturday morning returned. I kept watch for my fox friend and the occasional bear that Doug had mentioned. I saw neither, but spotted several squirrels feasting on apples that lay on the ground, fruit that had tumbled from the bushel baskets and brown bags of pickers or succumbed to gravity’s pull and fallen from the trees.
I had a fleeting notion to do what Will had suggested: pilfer the merchandise. I wouldn’t dare; I’d probably be caught by Doug jogging by at the very moment I plucked an apple from a branch. I knew he wouldn’t chastise me, but I still imagined being cast from the paradise of my big photo contract over one bite of an apple. I refused to be a modern Eve.
Where was Doug, anyway? Was he too tired from last night’s festivities to do his run? Did he go by when I was deep among the trees?
I finished in the orchards at eight-thirty and headed for the pumpkin field to check out the damage done by Saturday’s crowd. I went through the gate on the eastern side of the field and walked along the access road. There were plenty of gaps between pumpkins that hadn’t been picked; the missing sections looked like the jagged spaces between the teeth of the jack-o’-lanterns.
I took the same route I’d traveled Saturday morning, taking the crossroad from east to west. It was a tranquil jaunt that ended with a disturbing sight. One of the bales from the left corner of the crossroad stood in two pieces in the middle of the crossroad. Straws of hay from the busted bale lay scattered across the dirt road and pumpkin field. The second bale appeared untouched, but the bales situated on the right corner of the crossroad had also been hit. One bale stood busted among the pumpkins; the second bale sat on the edge of the access road.
