An explosive conspiracy sets the ocean roiling for a deep-diving investigator in a riveting thriller by the author of the Amazon Charts bestseller The Girl Beneath the Sea.
A distress call draws rescuers Sloan McPherson and the Underwater Investigation Unit to a cruise ship off the coast of Fort Lauderdale that’s sinking from a mysterious explosion. When it appears to be the work of an ecoterrorist and other ships are threatened, it becomes a race against time. More clues are discovered, and evidence is in danger of being washed away by a coming tropical storm. Sloan grows concerned that key details are being ignored, and a strange lack of urgency by authorities sets off alarms.
As the troubling questions compound, Sloan is determined to chase down every lead she has. Her persistence is getting her closer to the truth: that there’s something far more troubling at play than the official explanation. It’s also putting Sloan on a collision course with an enemy more powerful than she realizes, in a case so complex and deadly it may be impossible to prove. Now cracking the case is a matter of staying one step ahead of someone with every resource imaginable to bury Sloan and everything she knows.

Sea Storm by Andrew Mayne is fast-moving, thrilling, and had me on the seat of my chair. I love it!

Will McPherson and Hughes find the proof to send the mastermind to jail?

Sloan McPherson

Our investigator is Sloan McPherson. She is a member of the Underwater Investigation Unit in Florida. She was at the story’s start but let’s not get ahead. Sloan works with Scott Hughes and their boss, George Solar. Scott and Sloan are experienced divers, but they are also investigators. Sloan seems to have this sixth sense or intuition that leads her in the correct direction, which most of the time is also the dangerous way. She doesn’t balance her home and work life well, but her family seems to understand and help with things when needed.

Sloan is a fantastic character. She has grit, experience, snark, and balls of steel. McPherson doesn’t like to back down to anyone, especially if they are breaking the law or messing up the ocean. Throughout the series, we have seen lots of growth for Sloan, but I think she grows even more in this installment. Here is a quote from the book that looks at Sloan’s development.

A breeze chills the part of my face that’s not covered with a bandage and snaps me back to my senses. In that moment, I have a realization.

I respect Solar and I love Run, but neither of them is my father. If I know something is right, I don’t need their permission to feel good about myself, or their forgiveness when I do something wrong.

That burning I felt deep down earlier today when my face got smashed…it wasn’t just rage, and it wasn’t only my fear of mortality; it was also the fear of what Solar and Run would say when they found out that I got myself into another stupid situation.

It was the fear of their disapproval because I hold their opinions of me so far above my own.

It’s not anything they’ve forced on me. And maybe they don’t know how I internalize it, but I have to start accepting that I’m an adult, not some kind of second-class person who needs my self-opinion validated.

They can tell me I did something stupid-chances are they’ll be right in most situations-but that doesn’t mean that I’m a stupid person.

I have to pay more attention to what Sloan thinks about Sloan than what they think.

Sea Storm CRThe Mystery

The team figures out the mastermind behind the bombing of a cruise ship. The problem is the man has money and clout. For every clue, they find he cuts off something, like their positions, their families’ livelihood, who knows how far he is willing to go. The man has connections, and he isn’t afraid to use them. But what is the real reason that he is doing all of this? That is the only one of the many questions that the team is asking themselves. Mr. Mayne does such a fabulous job. I have never been scuba diving, yet I feel like I have. Don’t worry; I will not charge out and start diving without proper instructions.

Five Stars

My rating for Sea Storm by Andrew Mayne is five stars. I highly recommend this book and the series. Where else does the little person get to take down the Goliaths of the world? Even if it is usually at their own personal risk.

About Andrew Mayne

Andrew Mayne

Andrew Mayne is an Edgar nominated author, Thriller Award finalist, star of Shark Week and A&E television’s Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne.

A best-selling novelist and magician, Andrew Mayne has performed his unique brand of illusion on five continents, his YouTube videos have millions of views and he’s cultivated thousands of fans for his magic, books and podcasts calling themselves ‘Mayniacs’.

Taking magic in a new direction, Andrew created his own style of magic called “Shock Magic”; combining the impact of large scale illusion with the in-your-face approach of street magic. It’s fun, it’s irreverent, it’s the next evolution in magic. Andrew’s effects range from making ghosts appear on cell phones, shrinking himself to one foot tall and making a town think they were besieged by UFOs. His magic has even been performed for astronauts on the International Space Station! Andrew has invented over 400 magic effects and published 45 books and videos on the art of illusion. On the leading edge of magic and pop culture, he was among the first to invent magic for the iPhone (even before there were apps) via his website iPhoneTrick.com – that’s since been performed on millions of people.

He’s worked behind the scenes creatively for David Copperfield, Penn & Teller and David Blaine. In 2011 Andrew was invited to China on behalf of the legendary Beijing Circus to share with Asia’s leading magicians his modern approach to illusion. His 2012 tour brought him to Europe and the Middle East.

Andrew started his first world illusion tour while he was a teenager and was soon headlining in resorts and casinos around the world. With the support of talk show host and amateur magician Johnny Carson, Andrew Mayne started a program to use magic to teach critical thinking skills in public schools for the James Randi Educational Foundation. Andrew’s Wizard School segments, teaching magic and science to children, aired nationwide on Public Television.

Andrew is the author of over a dozen novels and has been nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original (Black Fall) and the Thriller Award for Name of the Devil. His recent novel, The Naturalist is an Amazon Charts best-seller and spent six weeks at the number one spot for all books on Amazon.
