The first in the heart-warming and deliciously mysterious Magical Fortune Cookie series from Lefty Award-nominee Jennifer J. Chow.

Felicity Jin grew up literally hanging onto Mom’s apron strings in their magical bakery in the quaint town of Pixie, California. Her mother’s enchanted baked goods, including puffy pineapple buns and creamy egg tarts, bring instant joy to all who consume them. Felicity has always been hesitant in the kitchen herself after many failed attempts, but a takeout meal gone wrong inspires her to craft some handmade fortune cookies.

They become so popular that Felicity runs out of generic fortunes and starts making her own personalized predictions. When one customer’s ill-fated fortune results in his murder, Felicity’s suspiciously specific fortune has the police focusing on her as the main culprit. Now Felicity must find a way to turn her luck around and get cleared from suspicion.

Ill-Fated Fortune by Jennifer J. Chow is a fantastic start to a new series.

Will Felicity learn to control her magic and clear her family’s name?

Felicity Jin

Our sleuth is Felicity Jin. She helps her mom run their family bakery, Gold Bakery, and her best friend, Kelvin, helps her with everything. She recently discovered her power and is still learning how to deal with it.

I genuinely like Felicity. She is a go-getter and isn’t giving up on her family bakery. So, she sets out to find other ways to sell her fortune cookies. Hustling all over Fresno, she finds small markets willing to sell her fortune cookies. Felicity has few friends but is happy in her small corner of Pixie. She even ends up with a magical bunny as a pet.

Ill-Fated Fortune CRThe Mystery

The mystery involves Felicity’s new power and the fortune she gives him regarding his health. The fortune could be considered a threat, but Felicity doesn’t even remember what she wrote and gave to the man. It was the first time she met the victim, and she didn’t realize he was also her competitor. As Felicity investigates the victim, she learns more and more about how he isn’t a nice man.

Five Stars

My rating for Ill-Fated Fortune by Jennifer J. Chow is five stars. I was entertained by the story and enjoyed getting to know Felicity, her mom, and Kelvin. If you have time, I highly recommend this paranormal cozy mystery.

I look forward to the next installment and seeing how Felicity handles her magic.
