From #1 New York Times bestselling author Aprilynne Pike comes a truly original new novel--Breaking Bad meets Marie Antoinette in a near future world where the residents of Versailles live like it's the eighteenth century and an almost-queen turns to drug dealing to save her own life.Outside the palace of Versailles, it's modern day. Inside, the people dress, eat, and act like it's the eighteenth century--with the added bonus of technology to make court life lavish, privileged, and frivolous. The palace has every indulgence, but for one pretty young thing, it's about to become a very beautiful prison.
When Danica witnesses an act of murder by the young king, her mother makes a cruel power play...blackmailing the king into making Dani his queen. When she turns eighteen, Dani will marry the most ruthless and dangerous man of the court. She has six months to escape her terrifying destiny. Six months to raise enough money to disappear into the real world beyond the palace gates.
Her ticket out? Glitter. A drug so powerful that a tiny pinch mixed into a pot of rouge or lip gloss can make the wearer hopelessly addicted. Addicted to a drug Dani can sell for more money than she ever dreamed. But in Versailles, secrets are impossible to keep. And the most dangerous secret--falling for a drug dealer outside the palace walls--is one risk she has to take.
"I adored this genre-bending, futuristic, and super swoon-y romance featuring a strong anti-heroine to root for--fun, refreshing, and unpredictable!" --#1 New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz
What would you do if you wanted to get away from your life?
Glitter by Aprilynne Pike is a fantastic book. It was good. I have to admit that I didn’t know what to expect since this was my first Steampunk book. I have to say that I liked it a lot. The book was wonderfully written and one that made me feel bad for the characters in it as well.
What I liked about this book:
- The first thing I love about this book is that the book is in the first person. I think that this works well for this book.
- Another thing that I liked about this book is that at the front of the book is a map of the palace. Which I thought is cool especially since it helps to know where the places are that the MC was talking about in the palace of Versailles.
- It’s interesting to see the way that the character ultimately evolves throughout the whole book from the girl we first meet to the lady at the end. Danica Grayon is the main character, and she is a pretty interesting character.
- I loved with how the whole thing is set up in the palace that they live in and with how they also speak a bit of French.
What I disliked about this book:
- I didn’t like with how Danica didn’t stand up to her mom. I didn’t get with why she didn’t, but it’s also made sense at the same time.
- The other thing that I didn’t like is how the King appears to be in his late teens but doesn’t try to make everyone see that he is anything but a late teen.
- I also didn’t like how Danica treated her friends as well.
What I am curious about for the next book:
I am curious about how Danica will deal with the new development that happened at the end of Glitter in the next book.
Five Stars
Glitter by Aprilynne Pike is a great book. I recommend it to anyone that likes young adult books and would like to have their first introduction to Steampunk. I am giving this book five stars since it was superb, kept me guessing, and made me think about it when I was doing other things.
Anyways until the next time enjoy this review brought to you by
