Subduing the barbaric hordes came easy, until he married one of them.
Everyone in the Celtic Catuvellauni village assumed Ness would marry the man she had loved since age fifteen. Their eventual matrimony seemed preordained. His inscrutable rejection of Ness sends shock through the entire community. Heartbroken but resilient, Ness accepts a marriage proposal from a most unlikely eligible bachelor.
Battle scarred and weary of solitude, Roman Tribune Aquilus trained to do just one thing all his life—stoically serve the empire. The beautiful tribeswoman perfectly answers a long ignored call from deep within his soul. Though he adores his new bride, when Ness harms a political connection, Aquilus lays down the law.
But Celtic women aren't inclined to submit to inconvenient rules, and the only obstacle standing between Ness and a Celtic divorce is Aquilus's garrison of legionaries.
Will Roman might, Celtic stubbornness, or something else entirely prevail?
My take on this book:
For Life or Until by Anne Garboczi Evans this is my second book by this author. This book had a very slow start, but it was a good read.
What I like about this book is that these characters, much like in Plum Pudding Bride, are three-dimensional. It felt like I was actually there with the characters. Everything about this book seemed so real. You could tell Mrs. Garboczi Evans took her time and researched the era as best she could. It showed everything about the book seems real. Ness, is the main character, starts off the book as an eighteen-year-old girl wanting to win the heart of her childhood friend. Instead, she ends up doing something completely different from what a Celt should do back in that time. Aquilis is another main character, I think he’s about one or two years older than Ness when they first met and he has been a bit preoccupied throughout the book. Oh but, don’t worry about the happy ending.
What I didn’t like about the book is that Ness marrying a Roman should have known at some point that she would have to go to Rome. Also, she was aware of Aquilis place within the Roman Empire and that he would be very busy. Ness being a Celt wants to still live off the land. She also wants her children to do the same things that she grew up doing. Aquilis, though, should have also known that Ness would have still wanted the land and should have listened to what she wanted instead of always doing what he wanted. Even though he thought it was helping out the Roman Empire.
3 Star Rating
For Life or Until by Anne Garboczi Evans is a good book even though it took me a long time to get it finished. I am giving this book 3 stars because of that and I will recommend this book to anyone that likes period books.
