Summary:

A divorced sleuth in her thirties must bring peace back to her small town after a murder tears neighbors and family members apart in this series debut from Agatha Award nominee Allison Brook, perfect for fans of Cynthia Riggs and Eva Gates.

Delia Dickens has come home to Dickens Island, a small island in the Long Island Sound, after a twelve-year stint in Manhattan. She’s looking forward to helping her father revitalize the general store that the family owns as well as curating a small book nook. Most importantly, she wants to reunite with her fifteen-year-old son. But Dickens Island isn’t the peaceful town Delia remembers–and she might be in more danger here than she ever was in the big city.

Delia’s Aunt Reenie and Uncle Brad, both prominent community leaders, are at odds over the sale of a farm and its future use. This has created friction, not only in their marriage, but amongst the citizens of the town. When a young woman, new to the town council and friendly with Brad, is found murdered, everything escalates and reaches a new boiling point.

With Reenie and Brad both suspects in the case and at each other’s throats, the townspeople start to take sides. When the ghost of her grandmother visits her, Delia learns how past events have impacted the present, and it is up to her to expose the farm’s sordid secrets in order to catch a murderer and restore peace to her beloved island.

Character Interview with Delia Dickens

How did you and your author meet?

Allison and I met about two years ago. We bumped into each other in a coffee shop and discovered we had a lot in common. After chatting a while, Allison decided to make me the sleuth in her new series.

Why did this writer decide to feature you in a whole series of books?

Allison liked the idea that I’d lived most of my life on an island in the Long Island Sound, and that the island was named after one of my ancestors. She was intrigued to find out that my house has a secret room. Even more intrigued when I told her in confidence that my grandmother often appears in the room to chat with me about our family and what’s happening on Dickens Island.

Do you have any friends or family helping you out?

Yes–my 15-year-old son Connor, my parents, my Aunt Reenie and Uncle Brad, my brother Wayne, my boyfriend Jack.

There are more… many more. So read the books!

Do you have a regular job and investigate on the side or are you a full-time detective?

I did have a regular job when I lived in Manhattan. I was in marketing. Now that I’m living on Dickens Island again, I’m using my marketing skills to modernize the Dickens General Store that my family owns and make it more appealing to residents and summer visitors. I also write articles for our weekly newspaper that my brother owns.

What is the funniest thing that happens to you or another character in this story?

Listening to the conversation between two murderers when one of them is drunk.

Have you solved other cases or is this your first one?

This is my very first case.

Do you have a gift or a special talent?

I’m not being modest when I say I don’t think I have a special talent. I love the people in my life and do what I can to make them happy.

Who is the most important individual in your life?

My son Connor.

What is your ideal vacation?

Taking a cruise around the world.

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?

My life is fine as it is right now, but I wish I had moved back to Dickens Island years ago instead of living and working in Manhattan while Connor lived with my parents for twelve years.
