Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the feared Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality. But when Xingyin’s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.
Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince.
To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies. But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream—striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.
Daughter of the Moon Goddess begins an enchanting duology which weaves ancient Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of immortals and magic, of loss and sacrifice—where love vies with honor, dreams are fraught with betrayal, and hope emerges triumphant.
Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan is inspired by the Chinese tale of the Moon Goddess and puts a wonderful spin on it.
Can Xingyin save her mother?
We follow Xingyin from her teenage years, when she leaves her mom behind, to her attempts to find a way to save her.
Xingyin
Xingyin lived most of her childhood in solitude, unaware of the fact that her existence wasn’t known to all the other immortals away from her home. She is a daring young teenage girl who wants to rescue her mom from her banishment, even if she has no clue how to do that quite yet. Xingyin grew up away from her mother, which, in hindsight, helped her discover a great deal about herself. She is good at archery, much like her father, and knows how to use her magic. If she had stayed with her mom, she might not have ever found her true potential. I like Xingyin, and I was rooting for her a lot throughout the book.
Her Quest
Xingyin has at least two quests throughout the book. Granted, both of the quests are linked together. Xingyin’s first quest is the one that she gave herself, which is trying to get her mom out of her banishment. Her second quest is finding these legendary creatures that not even some of the immortals have seen before. Xingyin’s quests take her on a journey of not only self-discovery but also realizing who her true friends and allies are. I liked this story a lot.
The Romance
Xingyin’s romantic life isn’t put on the back burner while she’s doing all of this, since it is the romance part of this romantic fantasy genre. She likes this one guy, and then there is one that she never considered. I have to say that I liked the first guy, even if she isn’t too sure if she should like him.
Five Stars
My rating for Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan is five stars, and I recommend it. It’s a great story, even for someone who has never heard of the Chinese legend of the Moon Goddess before. I loved the story and the characters, especially how Xingyin grew throughout it.
